Ditch the pitching change visits completely. Have the pitcher know he's done when his replacement trots onto the field.

c'mon you know baseball better than that.. mound visits are for more than telling a guy he's done.Agreed. What other sport has a coach go on the field/court to tell a player he is out?Ditch the pitching change visits completely. Have the pitcher know he's done when his replacement trots onto the field.

Mound visits are used to give the relief pitcher more time to warm up more than anything. Sometimes they are used for strategy for batters or defensive alignment. My point is, make the mound visit the "timeout" where the manager can deal with strategy. They get 6. If the manager just wants to put in a new pitcher, do so without the visit. There are currently many pitcher change visits that involve "Hey, how ya feelin'?
You're right, I don't really care because I've already called to the 'pen... okay, give me the ball." Make the managers actually be efficient with their visits.

I'd argue that most mound visits that involve changing pitchers, especially in the late innings, also involve discussion on alignments and scouting reports on upcoming batters.Mound visits are used to give the relief pitcher more time to warm up more than anything. If you don't want them to have extra "timeouts" from these visits, that's fine and I might agree.. but they aren't pointless most times.
MLB
I agree, late in the games, they are very meaningful. The efficiency thing is the area where I think they can improve. Pitchers scour over scouting reports already. There are bullpen coaches who can discuss the strategy with a pitcher before he goes in. I'm not saying do away with strategy, just be more efficient.
MLB
honestly, I'd wager most regular season games don't have 6 mound visits that don't involve a change. This rule will be really nice in the playoffs when the catcher is out for every batter. I think 4 is probably a better number to get down to, but it's a start like I said earlier.

Not sure if this is a real story or if Rich Eisen even said that.. but man what an idea that'd be

Uh huh... sure....
Seriously though, how exciting is a close game in the 9th and it's closer vs. best hitter on the opposite team? Why not let that happen more often?

so yeah that's exciting I can't argue. buuutUh huh... sure....

-why not the winning team too in the 9th? I'd be pissed if I blew a lead and lost and had 6, 7 and 8 hit for me in the top of the 9th.
- what happens when you go to extra innings when you tie it up?
- half the appeal to me in baseball is there's no running out the clock, icing the puck, etc.. you each have 27 outs to win the game. well, i don't think I'm a fan of one team having the meat of their order get an extra crack at it
- i admit I fall in the purist side of the spectrum, and I don't like the gimmicks, and while this isn't that gimmicky, it just takes away some of what makes it great, imo. What kind of strategies are you going to see in the 8th now down a run when you know you can send Rizzo, Bryant and Scwarber up next inning anyway?

I missed where it said only the losing team. I'd agree, it should be both squads get to plate whoever they want. Extras, you just go straight back to where you left off in the line up.

I am far from a baseball purist, but this idea just seems fundamentally wrong to me. For starters, how do you even manage the rest of the lineup that inning? Do you pinch-hit for their spot if they are already on base? It reeks of desperation to me. The 8th inning can be exciting because the team that is up one or so may be trying to get through the heart of the opposing order. If they can just come right back up in the ninth, it takes away from that.
Yes, it sucks when the 7-8-9 hitters are up against the closer, but that's life.
