Re: Judge

Isn't it up to the jays to hide their signals at least a little bit better? If judge is hitting dingers because he can peak with a side eye while he's at the plate, that says more about the jays than it does judge. Doesn't this fall into the "competitive edge" category and not spider tack level cheating category?

He said he was looking at his teammates yelling at the ump, so must have been his dugout. Not sure what they would think he’s looking at that’s nefarious.

The Yankees dugout is on the side he's looking toward, which I think is what the announcers are trying to point out?

If anything, they said he was calling pitches while he was standing on the on-deck circle. The pitcher was probably tipping his pitches and he was watching the dugout. I like the strategy side of baseball, and that's what it points too, imo. I don't think anything nefarious.

So they have the sign and are giving it to him, I guess. Flashing fingers, which would get picked up by cameras?

Tipping pitches makes sense.

Although judges explanation makes more sense now that I know Boone got ejected during the at bat for arguing balls and strikes lol.

Team that is known to have cheated had a guy looking at the dugout pre pitch and we wonder how it could be nefarious?

I'm not automatically assuming it's that, could be tipping pitches, could just be seeing what the chirping is all about, but the cheating option is >0%

it was a bad day for the umpires there. From what I read, the rule is that the pitcher can’t come to set until the batter is ready. In this case, Rojas kind of tricked Kimbrell into getting set before Rojas was ready

does it mean the new rules are bad? No

does it mean the new rules maybe need more refinement/understanding? yes

Just watching pirates games... I'm surprised noone is really trying to push the envelope on the pitch clock. In spring training some were. Staying set for ten seconds etc

The Hornell Red Raiders magical baseball season seemed to have a Section V championship attached with a 5-4 win over a favored Pal-Mac in Batavia Saturday afternoon.

However, the last strike of the game was caught, then appeared to hit the dirt. The Hornell catcher alertly tagged the runner and someone yelled out touching off a celebration at the mound.

However, the runner noticed the umpire didn’t call the out and ran to first. Runners kept going. As Hornell celebrated, the tying run scored. As many were celebrating, a few players realized what was going on, but with players from both teams on the field and umpires and coaches, who knew where the ball was as the winning run crossed!
Except he didn't tag the runner. Like it wasn't even close.

Speaking of things that weren't close, that called strike looked like it was ankle high.

They should both have to forfeit for wearing the same jersey.

I love how the coaches immediately went to yell at the umpire rather than yell at their players to wake up.

The ump gave the strikeout sign, and then then safe sign…. Was that to indicate the ball was dropped and he wasn’t tagged? He clearly never called him out. Sucks to lose that way, but coaches should’ve been paying closer attention to the call.

yeah that was my interpretation. Any coach that’s upset at the ump here is crazy because the only questionable call is the called third strike

It’s an awkward move for the umpire because usually on a dropped 3rd strike, there’s a swing. So it’s pretty obvious to everyone that it’s a strike. Since this was a called 3rd strike, he probably goes for the punchout but after the drop, makes a safe sign. In a perfect world, you only verbal that with a ‘strike 3’ without the theatrics. I would likely have a similar awkward movement but I would also be more demonstrative with my safe sign.
