Holmes' TD catch is #1 for me, and nobody will convince me otherwise.
That Harrison return is up there too. One of the most improbable plays in NFL history.

Have we talked about the NFL's new training camp helmet padding yet?

It's almost like they're well aware there's a problem, but don't want to do much about it.

Should have gone the Dark Helmet route instead.

I think it's only a matter of time until that technology is baked into the helmet. It'll look silly for a few years until we're all used to it and it's just another part of the game. As soon as the league figures out how to put its branding all over it, it'll be standard issue.

There was a competition show long ago, called maybe American Inventor? Something like that. Anyway, one of the people on there created some new sort of padding to be used on the underside of helmets. I swear he mentioned that he had been in contract with football leagues about it, but this was so very long ago.

Top 10 plays of all-time. Thoughts?

Video starts at the Steelers #10.

Holmes' TD catch is #1 for me, and nobody will convince me otherwise.
Eeeeeeh I can see the argument for either, but...
As far as the lore behind it and what it meant for the city, nothing will ever come close to the Immaculate Reception. It's had 50 years to grow as almost a mythological event that parents pass down to their children. The film has been studied almost as much as the Zapruder film. The spot where it happened is marked in the Heinz Field lot. There's a **** statue of it in the airport. It's literally one of the first things a visitor sees when they fly into Pittsburgh. There's an aura around those 70s teams that Santonio Holmes and Big Ben will never be able to compete with.

I get that, but it was well before my time, hence my choice.

Padding is whatevs, the brain is in a ball or liquid. Pad it if you want but it’s still gonna slam into the skull on impacts.

I’m not saying this isn’t an issue but I’m also not sure how much padding stops the sudden jolts.

My son's middle school team used them last year, if not for a couple of years now.

Not tackling with your head also helps.

If I had a son, there is no way I would ever let him play football. Simply out of the question.

The answer is less equipment, not more. You'd trade all of these micro-traumas that affect every single football player for the occasional severe trauma from dopes like Shazier.

Put them in rugby gear. Rugby has issues as well but it's a faster-paced continuous game. Football players stand around idly most of the time.

I wasn't allowed, but that was because my dad blew out both of his knees before the age of 16. Our son(s) won't play.

My wife and I said that for years, too. But to ease the news of moving before his eighth grade year, we said our 13 year old could try out. He's never played tackle football, and only 1 year of flag football, but many years of Madden. He's a pretty good athlete - playing travel baseball and soccer. I doubt he'll make the team, FWIW.

I broke my foot the first year I played, and my Mom used that as an excuse for me not to play anymore. Then I started playing hockey a year later, where I ultimately broke a wrist, bruised some ribs, and got at least one concussion.

I was in the marching band... I would get blisters on my hand from the sticks every year until I built up the callus. It was tough.

Makes sense. I'd probably put the Harrison pick 6 over the Holmes catch, but it'd be close.

Our high school and jr. high teams have used those for practice the last few years.

I agree that the helmet is too rigid. The player wearing it feels invincible and throws their body around in all sorts of situations that they wouldn't if they had less pads on. Those high speed collisions are what are driving the concussion issues.

The list of greatest plays of all time should be called "The Immaculate Reception Award of Excellence". It is not just the greatest play in Steelers' history, it is the greatest football play in history, period.

The Holmes catch wasn't even the greatest play in the game it happened, nor even the greatest part of that particular play itself.

The three seasons I played hockey at a high-ish level in college were the absolute worst in terms of players using their equipment as weapons, or thinking that they didn't have to exhibit any responsibility because the other player's gear would protect them. I went through multiple helmets and visors those seasons, and had multiple injuries and one very severe concussion. When it came time to switch over to beer league/rec hockey full time I swore I'd never skate in a league that required full face protection. That was the end of above-the-neck injuries and equipment failures.
I broke my foot the first year I played, and my Mom used that as an excuse for me not to play anymore. Then I started playing hockey a year later, where I ultimately broke a wrist, bruised some ribs, and got at least one concussion.
Similar story: I folded my pinky finger flat against my palm on day one of practice my sophomore year by smacking my hand into the back of another player's helmet during a jump ball drill. (They thought mid-drill amongst all the players was a good time to kneel down and tie their shoe laces) Me mum rescinded my permission slip, and that was that.

What? Harrison's TD run - which I assume you consider the best play in that game - was great. However, the entire play with Ben and Holmes was perfection. Perfect throw, perfect catch, a single god damn blade of grass between both toes and the white line. Absolute perfection. And it won them the game.

Yeah, Harrison was a failure by the cards. Ben/Holmes was the highest pressure you can have in the biggest moment of the biggest game AND it was made by the smallest of margins.
