I do these first thing in the morning and could not think of any other words, at the time, that had the 4th letter in that specific slot.

Immediately after I did it, I said "that was a dumb guess"

Does anyone else put an x as a filler so you can visualize the word? For instance today:

I was really struggling after 3. I had the SU to start, and I had AR but in the wrong spots. My guess was it ended with AR. After just staring for a few minutes I put in SUXAR just to visualize it and got sugar almost immediately.

I've done this with a piece of paper.

4 today, funny that

Second day in a row where I struck out on the first guess.

4 today. I'm such a stupid idiot. I had a yellow letter in my first guess that I forgot about in guess 2 and 3 and then was so stuck on guess 4. The only word I could think of that fit had that yellow letter in it but for some reason in my mind that letter was unavailable. Took like 10 mins or staring for it to dawn on me.

I go to sleep at ~3:30 if the Pens have a 7 pm (1 am) start and the game is worth staying up for. The alarm sounds at 9:15 am, so that's when I wake up - if I don't wake up a few minutes before that, which happens quite often - but not necessarily when I get up.

I think the date just doesn't stand out. I never know what day it is anyway. If you wrote NEW WORD or something that stood out more you'd be good
