I got a bunch of Cleveland area beers for Christmas from my MIL. Haven't been drinking as much lately, so it'll take some time to get through them, but I'm in the middle of a Great Lakes Blackout Stout. G'damn, this is a great beer.

It was pretty darn good. Recommend trying it if you get the chance.

I started my first homemade brew over the weekend. It's an imperial stout. The S.G. was only 1.070, so I'm a little bummed out by that. It may be because I didn't swirl the mash well enough with the water I used to top it off, so crossing my fingers that I didn't botch it.

Either way, my house smelled wonderful all day Saturday.

Assuming you get good fermentation and get down to ~1.010, that's still a 7.5% beer. Might not be as high as you want, but will still have a kick.

It's marketed as an 11%, so it'll be disappointing. That doesn't mean I won't be drinking said beer while a tear rolls down my face.

Many people who had made this beer previously said the yeast in the kit couldn't handle the high alcohol content, and they stopped their brew at around a 1.020 s.g. So not only did they get around a 12% ABV, but it was sweet to boot. That's some dangerous beer right there.

You mean you didn't immediately get kicked in the jaw by the sheer booziness of it?

I didn't find all that boozy to tell you the truth. I was shocked to read it's 18-20%.

According to a study by the Brewers Association, Pennsylvania ranks number 1 in the U.S for barrels of beer produced at 3.9 million. The next highest state is California at 3.2 million. To put that into perspective, that means CA is producing 1 barrel of beer for every 12 people in the state, whereas PA is producing 1 barrel for every 3 people in the state!

That’s not the only area that PA ranks in the top part of the country. In fact in most major categories the state ranks no lower than #7. Pennsylvania is #2 in economic impact, #2 in gallons produced per 21+ year old adult, #4 in impact per capita and #7 in Craft Breweries per state (however that last number is always rising as more open!)

I make the hour drive frequently just to fill growlers and turn around and come home. I just want them to start canning. Even if it's just General Braddock.

There was some hippy bar in college where I met my wife. It was right across the street from her house and we drank a lot of Yuengling black and tans there. Still enjoy those.

I've never been moved enough to fact-check this, but one of the claims my high school civics teacher made was that Altoona once had the most per capita liquor licenses of any municipality in the US.*

Further context: Ireland is a nation of roughly 4.7 million people, a bit less than 60% of whom are over the legal drinking age of 18. Between them, they consume roughly 400 million liters of Guinness every year, which is something like 160 pints per person.

* That was apparently during the 1920s, when Blair County also was said to have the highest per capita membership in the KKK. Woot.

Beer store made an error in my favor. I got a mixed 6-pack consisting of (3) Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA pounders?, a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, a North Country Paleo IPA, and a Southern Tier Citra Hopped Live Pale Ale, all for $7.50. I was going to say that that wasn't right, but who am I to tell an establishment how to run their business.

This version of dodints Brew is no joke. The beer pays homage to Miles Davis, and consists of three parts imperial stout aged on oak and one part “native African honey beer” aged on Palo Santo. It’s 9% and it’s on the streets starting this weekend in six packs. Even better, it’s going to be available year round throughout 2018.
That's exciting. Who is the other Palo Santo Marron drinker here???
