The Brettavilles are great. The Blueberry was probably my least favorite, but blueberry is really tough to nail down. Easily my least favorite Cascade too. Haven't had the others.@Kraftster
Haven't tried anything yet, but my Almanac haul arrived yesterday.
Farmer's Reserve Blueberry
Farmer's Reserve Strawberry
Farmer's Reserve Citrus

BEER
Tried 3 of the Almanac beers tonight...
The Peach de Brettaville was my favorite. The Apricot was also pretty good, but I preferred the Peach. Also tried the Farmer's Reserve Citrus which I liked about the same as the Apricot. It was more sour for sure though.
I'm actually sad that I only had one of the Peach... I'd gladly drink that again.

Apparently Draai Laag is expanding and rebranding as Strange Roots experimental ales....

Not sure how I feel about this.

Maybe that makes sense, but at the cost of losing your brand identity?....I don't know. We’re simply applying those experimental brewing theories to a wider variety of styles than just the wild and sour beers DL became synonymous with.

BEER
Update: The beer finished just under 1.030 s.g., so I really don't know what happened. Either the alcohol content was high and the yeast couldn't survive, or I let it get too cold and it killed the fermentation process. I sampled one the other day and it tasted pretty good, but didn't get a buzz which I would expect at 11-12%. It has a 98 IBU rating, but I thought it was smooth considering the high rating. It's marketed as an 11%, so it'll be disappointing. That doesn't mean I won't be drinking said beer while a tear rolls down my face.Assuming you get good fermentation and get down to ~1.010, that's still a 7.5% beer. Might not be as high as you want, but will still have a kick.
Many people who had made this beer previously said the yeast in the kit couldn't handle the high alcohol content, and they stopped their brew at around a 1.020 s.g. So not only did they get around a 12% ABV, but it was sweet to boot. That's some dangerous beer right there.
At the very least I have a beer that tastes good, even if it didn't finish with the expected ABV.

Or keep the sours as DL and release the new beers as SR?I don't get why they can't brew the varieties under the same name? Would people really be upset if they made something other than a wild and sour beer under draai laag?
I don't get the rebranding part at all. Did a bunch of people not like the name or something? Maybe they were afraid that DL was synonymous with sour and people that don't like them wouldn't give it a try?

It's fun, but as you said... having that much beer around makes me want to drink every night, especially if it's good.Homebrewing is one of those things I've seriously thought about doing, except that I'm not sure that my fat ass really needs to have gallons of beer around my house.

Has to be more to the DL rebranding. Maybe a new big time investor? Maybe they're seeing they pigeon-holed themselves in terms of what the brand is/is known for?
Either way, and regardless of whether they are actually interested in brewing new styles or the economics of current beer are dictating that they do that (I would tend to think the latter tbh), I really hope they bag the bizarre **** and trillion beers and start dialing in some normal f'ing beers. I should love having a brewery doing these styles in my backyard, but between the insistence on weird for the sake of weird and Dennis being fairly condescending from my encounters, I have stayed the hell away from there for the most part.
Definitely a significant move, though. Hard to imagine a brewery signed on with Shelton just bagging their name. Doesn't sound like it will jeopardize their distribution relationship, but I have to wonder if it might eventually?

For what it's worth, it seems that they felt somewhat confined by the old name and what it stood for. He expressly says they're going to making pale ales and have already started experimenting with stouts. Also the article says their distributors are on board with the change after some initial questions.
