Watching Game 7 of the 1979 WS. Convinced I would grow to hate Howard Cosell pretty quickly.

Analysis of Reynolds’s 2021 performance.

Takeaway, low-risk In holding Reynolds if teams aren’t meeting return demands.

Ah, the same firm that owns IMG academy. Seems like a highly ethical outfit.

What's the relevance of that connection?

Its 69 wins. Nice.

Replacement team is 47.6 and that totals 22 above replacement.

If that's how the math works, that is.

Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. ZiPS is assuming that the designated hitter will continue in force in 2022.
So no that's not how the math works ha

I guess outside of adding another 1B/OF/DH bat and a backup C, they are likely finished tinkering with the roster heading into training camp. Which is of course sad.

I think my only sort of condition for this team, is that they don't turn the season into an extended tryout for a very specific group of players. Basically, the cohort below that is currently on the 40-man roster, either they show something in camp and actually earn playing timey, or you are out. Two categories for these players "No leash" - if you suck in camp or in April, DFA. "Some leash" - you are awarded some suck. Guys like Castro and Contreras I am not considering, because they can just go to the minors. I am not sure I can handle and level of front-office devotion to all the guys they've dumpster dived for.

No Leash:
Kranick, Howard, Crowe, Banda, Peters, Wilson, Park, Oliva, Allen, Hanhold, Mears, Chavis
Some Leash: Brubaker, Yajure, Cederlind, Thompson, Keller

TL, unless the CBA changes Super 2, your Leash/No Leash will be your 2022 Pittsburgh Pirates with a little bit of good players sprinkled in. Inevitably, one of these leashers will have an outlier year and we'll spend the offseason wondering how they fit into the 2028 championship run.

Forgot about some important ones.

Alford, Tucker - No leash
Gamel - Some leash

Robbie, obviously 2022 is an extended tryout season. I think my point is just related to this massive cyst on their 40-man that grew uncontrollably during the 2021 trade deadline. These guys either have to show something early in 2021, or be gone at some point during this year.

why the hell is jared oliva even on the 40 man to begin with? he had a 686 ops in AAA and doesn't play a premier defensive position. he should get on with his life's work.

These guys with a short leash... suppose they flame out.

Then what? Not like we have better options knocking down the door (yet)

So many of these guys are players that have had multiple opportunities and have yet to cling on anywhere. If Chavis and Tucker are hitting .200 after 100+ at bats into this season, and if they get a shot somewhere else and succeed, that's just life. These aren't Glasnow situations where the coaches were **** up, these are Brandon Moss situations where for some random ass reason, the player develops in a different situation.

If some other team takes a shot at Kranick or Oliva because the Pirates try to DFA them to Indy, so be it. As for replacements, the Pirates can either take more fliers these types that other teams are dumping, promote guys like Castro, Castillo or Canaan, or give a shot to someone they left off the 40-man that is looking decent in Indy.
