He started social distancing yesterday
"First thing he has caught in a while" was my quip to my buddy who texted me.

Kinda hard to catch stuff when no one throws at him.

I’d be interested to see metrics of deep balls in the middle of the field against the Steelers before Minkah got here and after. I’m guessing that passes traveling 15 or more yards down the middle have drastically dropped off. That IMO has a domino effect in allowing our corners to focus more on the outside.

Stop the vocal minority of Minkah hate!

I can’t find anything showing middle of the field and outside. The overall passing defense stats are fairly consistent though.

Average passing yards per game given up,

2018 - 231.1
2019 - 194.6
2020 - 194.4
2021 - 225.9

Big plays given up, 20+ and 40+ passing plays

2018 - 53 and 7 respectively
2019 - 43 and 6 respectively
2020 - 43 and 7 respectively
2021 - 51 and 5 projected over 16 games (purposely didn’t do 17)

So as a whole it seems the team got much better defending the pass since Minkah’s arrival. As I said I’d be willing to guess that middle of the field passing stats reflect very positively on Minkah being here. Additionally being able to rush the QB effectively has also helped. This current season though, teams are seeming to find some cracks.

The big thing that changed after his arrival was interceptions. They went several years from generally fewer than 1 per game (even had a year in the single-digit club) to being more consistently up around 18-20, although this year they've been sort of tragic.

This was my concern in signing him last year. This was a known commodity about him; he likes being an NFL QB way more than he likes doing the work of being an NFL QB. And that's why I thought signing him was a bad idea.

It's hard to criticize the Steelers for signing him if they thought of him as a project/3rd stringer. If they thought the guy had great talent but just needed a change of scenery and a little coaching, what's the harm? Worst case he becomes your starter after #1 and #2 are knocked out. At that point, not sure any teams have aspirations of winning an Owl

The concern I had was that they went out and got him as a project potential QB1, and that they were no longer interested in seeking solutions at the position. (For the time being) This is where I was with Darnold last off season; get him cheap, fix him, and maybe you've got yourselves a decent QB1 for a few years. The Steelers went from having unquestionably the best QB in the division to now having the worst QB in the division, in the span of like one year. And I worried the franchise saw Haskins as that 'answer' (short term), and I just didn't see it. Haskins is comprised primarily of red flags and lethargy.

You can be a bust QB and still make bank if you even give the illusion of having some kind of arm talent.

Anyone seen any data on how the two rookie starting lineman are grading out? I haven't been watching, I just assumed those guys were named starters due to lack of options. But, if this draft does somehow produce a long term starting RB, TE and two lineman, than it's a boon.

When I see articles like "Mason Rudolph aktchuawly had a decent game against the Lions, according to PFF," it makes it hard to trust any analytics. And that's the only way I could possibly judge an o-lineman other than sacks given up/rushing yards provided per game. So sorry Troy, can't help you there.

I believe lineman are like goalies in hockey. Takes a few years for them to get into their prime. And if you trust the announcers, it also takes some time for an o-line unit to "gel". Not sure I buy into that theory, but it's out there.

For sure, need some actually smart person to watch video of them and assess how they are performing in one-on-one matchups. Does Matt Williamson do radio bits anymore these days? I feel like when he used to go on AM 1250 and talk Steelers, was the only time in my life where I actually learned anything about football.

I think Dan Moore is doing okay. Green is okay at run block but like bottom 3ish in the league at pass block win rate? I'll see if I can find the chart

I've been driving in to the office on Tuesdays and Wednesday. On one of those days, da fan morning show has some guy that works for PFF or something like PFF. I think his name is spielberger. He routinely bashes Moore.

So you're saying they didn't land a premier LT in the 4th round?

Fire Tomlin and Colbert. Rooneys need to sell too.

I recommend The QB School YouTube channel. Obviously focuses on QB play, but almost every video includes breakdowns of blocking schemes, defensive alignments, etc. Very good content imo.

Really exposing myself as someone who doesn’t listen to talk sports radio.

I feel like every time I put it on, I hear zeise, so I have the same response of “how is this voice on the radio?”
