My first thought is an amount of money to spend, so I'm going to say $1,000. To me, less than $100 is not a big purchase. $100 to $1,000 is a big purchase, but not an amount of money that really requires planning or advance savings. More than $1,000 is something I have to specifically account for, such as timing the purchase around other purchases (assuming it's not an emergency expense).

Another alternate definition would be "Slightly more than the last gun I bought." A lot of gun guys have that definition.
