The no fans thing doesn't bother me, so the fact that it's a pandemic has little to do with the quality. I'll buy the NBC dropping a turd argument.

If anything diminished 1996 it's that Béla Károlyi is the gymnastics equivalent of Joe Paterno.
Even Joe Paterno let his athletes eat food.

Sort of makes her more heroic, actually.

She’s on the Mount Rushmore for me. If you weren’t watching live in ‘96, it also would make sense not to agree.

'96 was the last Olympics I watched in its entirety. It was right before we got the internet.

NBC's gymnastics coverage has been horrible. In the women's team event, they didn't even show Great Britain, and they won bronze. Japan also won bronze in one of the single events, and they didn't show her routine either.

Also, I really don't give a damn about watching the athlete's families watching the game. Most of their reactions are kinda dull, and I don't really blame them.

I was watching live. That's why I know how intertwined dude was in the whole thing. Again, nobody ever argued that it wasn't impressive. Your thought was that it was underrated. I was just giving a few theories as to why that may be. Sure, maybe the average person doesn't know what a gross dude Bela was, but NBC does. So due to that knowledge, maybe they don't celebrate the 96 team and specifically Strug as much as they would like to, which makes the moment seem forgotten.

The interaction of the families and the athletes over Teams post event is peak cringe.

quite frankly the time difference is sucking all the fun out of it. as I was driving to work the local news station spoiled the women's soccer bronze game for me:
the USA women's team is leaving Tokyo with a medal though not the one they wanted.
gee thanks! I had no idea of the result up to then. I wasn't necessarily going to watch a replay but there was no warning just BAM! dude spits it out.

there's also been too many replays. I don't need to see the USA men's basketball team vs Spain 3 times in a 24 hour period.
also, not sure if this is just a Directv thing but I'll look up something on the guide and it'll be like "Team Handball ROC v Denmark 10:00AM" which I get, is a replay but why is it 10:15 and some men's soccer game, also a replay between Mexico and Slovakia is only just past halftime?

ok, I'm done. :pop:

We’ve been using peacock and it is terrible. They have most sports segmented into their own page, but highlights are visible before replays. So you see “USA wins gold in blumbking!” then right below it you see “Blumpking Gold Medal replay”

Thanks. You just ruined the damn ending you jackwagons.

So the Strug thing (yes, again)…this is something nobody knew. Or knows. Like…we’re all with it people and most of us are surprised here.

So…still historically impressive and not diminished at all since ‘96 by creepy coaches or math.
Athletic greatness is determined in large part by timing and 'rising to the occasion'. Strug's second vault didn't matter. So no, it doesn't get the recognition you deem it worthy of. If she hadn't vaulted at all, it wouldn't have mattered; the 0.0 for not going would've been dropped in the final reckoning (lowest score isn't counted), and USA already had the numbers on their side. Frankly, thinking about makes me more sad for Strug than proud.

Bela Karolyi being a world-class shithead is sort of a value-add, but isn't determinative here.

Yeah, this is the case with every Olympiad that takes place significantly out of phase time-wise. I mean, pretty much every event is technically happening tomorrow while it's going on live, so you wake up to half a dozen phone notifications of "[athlete] wins gold in [event]".

Which is why I'm looking forward to the LA28 Games. :D

Strug didn’t know about 0.0 so she rose to the occasion. Don’t be weird.

It's also the games themselves. I woke up at 4AM to watch USA in the 2010 World Cup. Also told my boss I was going home at lunch to watch USA vs. Germany in 2014, and brought a coworker with me.

Everybody in the world who has ever watched a judged athletic competition knows the highest and lowest scores are discarded. This isn't rocket surgery.

Dude. Like every American in 96 thought she needed to do that to win. It definitely seemed like that was her impression as well.

The premise here is that she just wanted to experience excruciating pain for funzies?

I used to get up at 4 am to watch European rounds of F1 races on live TV. I outgrew that habit many moons ago.

I thought the premise was that because it wasn't actually required it is diminished in the collective consciousness of American Olympic memories and is thus less celebrated than, say, MLR's perfect 10.

The premise here is that her dadhole coach pressured her into doing it for the furtherance of his own ego, pursuant to the pervasively toxic culture of USA Gymnastics

"You better do it."

When you picture the moment in your head, you don't see this image......

.....you see this image:

It's also worth remembering that while she hurt her ankle on the first vault, the massive injury that effectively ended her career happened on the second vault.

I was reading up on this a bit this morning and its kind of interesting that what ultimately killed her gymnastics career was that she was rushed into doing those dumb touring shows too soon after '96 and the ankle never healed. She's a second-grade teacher now.
