I was skeptical after the UMass game because it was UMass, but Petrishen seems to have really found a role on this team and is excelling at it. Love linebacker depth and this year it easily covers the two deep.

I'd just like to point out that AJ Davis didn't play one snap yesterday

Unfortunately neither did Hammond. At this point either every RB sucks or none of the OL can run block to save their lives. OL needs more Goncalves.

Idk but the last two Pitt teams I hoped for to get ranked promptly fell right out of the rankings so it is what it is. If they're good they'll eventually get ranked. I'd hope they can beat WMU, New Hampshire and GT and have a decent ranking going into the VT game

College football is pretty easy to hate right now. Not paying players sucks. NILs also suck. Both the old and new transfer rules suck. It sucks that there are like 5 teams that make the CFP. But yesterday’s game is why college football is so much fun. Crazy swings in momentum, trick plays, colossal f ups, and a ton of fun.

Also, Kenneth Shane Pickett is a freaking gem.

Great turnaround from Pittsburgh
This is an effortless Lemieux in 88-89 level Shad pitt post. The use of “Pittsburgh” giving the whole post an unsettling vibe.

Frankly the Vols let you down.

Does this Pitt W change anyone’s outlook on the season? It does not change mine.

I was a little encouraged that they were able to grind out the clock on the ground, and also convert a couple 4th and short opportunities. The run game still isn't good, but it's at least got a pulse and come do or die time, it did its job. So I had this game as a win, and am a little higher on them than I was going in. But not in a material way. I still say 9-3

I can see them winning one of unc or vtech, but losing to either gatech, duke or va. So this game was the difference between 8-4 and 7-5

Sometime last year, Michael Irvin was on the da fan getting interviewed about the Stillers. I'm paraphrasing here, but what he said was bascially "Having a good run game doesn't mean you have to run the ball alot, or have a good yards per carry, or have good balance between run and pass. A good run game to me means that when you need to get yards, you get yards." It was a rare moment of astute observation from Irvin, but i do agree. I dont care if pitt throws the ball 50 times, and while it gets old watching good davis run up the middle with a bad offensive line, what matters most is getting a first down when you really need it. So yes, the running game was encouraging for that standpoint.

Overall though, we didn't learn much.

New Super Panthers in the NFL:

Jackson and Hamlin: no defense snaps, Bills lose
Patrick Jones II: scratched, Vikings lose
Rashad Weaver: scratched, Titans lose
Jason Pinnock: scratched, Jets lose

Hope these teams learned their lesson.

The optimist in me: Tennessee was the toughest non-conf. game on the schedule, so going unbeaten in non-conf play for the first time ever (a stat that still blows my mind, considering this is season 32 of Pitt conference play, I think) should happen. Even better, this sets them up nicely for the possibility of a 9-win or maybe even 10-win regular season, given that it looks like it's going to be another season of Coastal Chaos.

The Pitt fan in me:
There's that little bit of hope, that little bit of optimism. A little momentum after a nice road win. A chance to build a little more with a couple of very winnable home games before going on the road for a couple of potentially-winnable conference games. But do you not see the word in script on the side of your team's helmet? Remember Toledo in 2003 ring a bell? Athens, Ohio in 2005? Akron and those godforsaken chrome helmets in 2014? Yep. And here comes Western Michigan. This is Pitt. Surely the Football Gods see this game this weekend as a neon-bright opportunity to take the air out of this season early, just like every other year.

I'll say this, though...

This is the most confident I've been in a Pitt QB in a long time, maybe as long as I can remember (I was like 6 years old when Marino was at Pitt, so that doesn't count). Pickett was really good at Knoxville; he was accurate and he had a calm command I'm not sure I've ever really seen from him before. The passing attack looked balanced in their first real test this year. Mack, Krull, and Wayne did a great job creating secondary options for Addison, and Addison still produced 6 receptions and a TD. The offensive line did a good job protecting Pickett against a fairly athletic front seven. If those things all keep up, that's not a bad place to be.

For me, this just means they drop another game they shouldn't drop to balance nature out.

i'm probably going to get this stat wrong, but according to my dad, Directional Michigan lead the country last year in the % of completed passes that were more than 30+ yards. It was something like 10% of the passes that they completed (I don't think it was 10 % of passes attempted) were splash plays. Keep in mind that Directional Michigan only had #MACtion last year, but their QB is back. And you may have noticed pitt can be prone to long passes under Narduzzi. And you may have noticed 4 or 5 open Tennessee guys going deep a few days ago that were incompletions due to crappy QB play.

Seems like a recipe for disaster.
