I'll do a HOA when I'm old and completely dead inside. For now, nah. I had enough 'common area' nonsense in the military.

Maybe it's time to update your papers...because it looks like you just checked off "I'm a chump, and like to do chump things, and sing chump songs....chump chump chump...ch-chump" on the back of your chump card...and we know you have a chump card because you need one in order to be involved with an HOA...

maybe it’s because of the selection bias but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone who’s pro HOA. like I had to pay $100 a year and the only thing I ever got from them was an angry email when a hurricane came through, knocked a tree down and I didn’t clean it up in a sufficient enough amount of time

HOAs are one of the worst things about post-industrial society. Not the HOAs themselves but the level of self righteousness they rise to

It's a house union. Good intentions, then they go too far, get corrupt and shiftless...

The big issue - and I almost took this to the legal thread here - was a line in our covenant about maintaining (ie cutting/edging) grass around the retention pond. We had a survey done and our property boundary is well clear of the easement to the retention pond, as is every lot around this pond. Yet, the language was such that we were in charge of maintaining that little strip of land (despite it being owned by the developer). This made no sense, so I left it alone (and waiting for another love letter from the HOA). Then yesterday, I noticed the grass around the pond had been cut. So I guess they are taking care of it for now..
This sounds similar to the old who-owns-the-strip-of-grass-between-the-sidewalk-and-curb thing. Except instead of the municipality, your dispute is with Karen and her very concerned husband.

Yeah but what if, and try to follow along here, they didn’t go too far?

HOAs are like a mashup of the worst parts of owning and renting.

In a condo/townhouse situation I can see a measure of utility. But in detached housing? F**k all the way off with that, madames et monsieurs

See there's your problem. 99.86% of right thinking free peoples of the Earth probably regard 'any' as too far.

If I were well off enough that the HOA fees were no impact on me whatsoever I'd probably be okay with it. I think part of the annoyance is you're paying to be harassed.

If I were that well off I'd live in a gated community and get my money's worth from the HOA, though.

Exactly. We aren’t gated, but we have three playgrounds, a pool staffed with two lifeguards and an attendant, a clubhouse, 3 miles of nature path and three walkway bridges over a stream. That costs money to maintain. And the rules aren’t hard. Keep your grass cut, your shutters painted and your garbage cans out of street view. Yinz have some fragile mentals if you think that’s a bad thing.

Don't act like it doesn't get out of hand, though. HOAs are telling people what color their curtains have to be, because they're visible from the street. C'mon, man.

I genuinely don’t know what my HOA does. We don’t have any of those things n our neighborhood

Well that’s just silliness. Our only window covering exclusion is towels and newspapers.

If you ended your tirade with "maintain" I'd be all aboard HOAs. When it comes to telling me how my house should look, that's Karen level BS.
