I have teeth.
Good grief, I am terrible for this. I presently have - 1, 2, 3....... - 6 fingers with parts of nails gnawed to the quick.
When I was a young teen, I was a chronic nail biter. My parents offered me $5 for every nail not chewed after two weeks.
I collected my $50 and never went back.

Received a $50 parking ticket from the City of Wilkes Barre in the mail today.

I have not been to Wilkes Barre in 25 years. My car has never been to Wilkes Barre.

Checked how to appeal on the city website. They want me to send an appeal form and a $5 non refundable appeal fee.

So let me get this straight. Some meter maid on the other side of the state fat fingers or illegibly writes my license plate and now I have to snail mail you $5 to maybe tell me to eff off and pay you regardless?

This sounds unconstitutional n’at.

Whatever you do, start the dispute process immediately. First by confirming that it's a legit citation from the correct authority. Also, look for any sort of documentary evidence you can provide (credit card receipts, work records, etc) that shows you weren't even in WB on the day the citation was issued. Also note any discrepancies between the description of the vehicle on the citation and your actual car; does the make/model and color match your car? Things like that.

Also, it's usually best to present defenses to this sort of thing in person, but I don't really think that's viable here. In fact, your inability to refute the citation in person might actually be a credible defense for why you weren't in WB on the day.

What happens if you don't pay the fine? You can't visit WB anymore?

If it's a city/municipal citation, they can suspend your license, boot your car, and even have a bench warrant issued for your arrest if you don't pay. That's not likely for a single (non)violation, but it's still on the menu of possibilities. If it's from a private company, their remedies are more limited.

I'd be calling their office and speaking to somebody in person. $5 isn't much, obviously, but you shouldn't have to pay a penny to fix somebody else's screw up.

It's immaterial because likely no action will be taken...but I don't believe you can have your license suspended in Pennsylvania for unpaid parking tickets...

I called and got the parking enforcement officers voicemail.

The (semi) issue I have is that the vehicle is with my son in College in Rochester. So of course I called and read him the riot act about why he did not pay the parking ticket and what’s in Wilkes Barre anyway? He said he has not left New York since college started. EZ Pass and Verizon records back him up. Says he did not lend it to anyone.

The only description on the slip is the license number and “Ford.” No copy of actual ticket included. Possibly came from DMV record.

If this guy does not get back to me I suppose I will send their $5. I hate the principle of it but it sounds like it could get shitty if I don’t play.

Just hard to believe if they say “sorry our bad” they get to keep my $5.

Got into an accident today. The car in front of me was turning right at an intersection, as was I. Well they went, so I pulled up and was looking left, no cars coming, I pull through and apparently the car in front of me decided to stop about halfway onto the road. I know it's my fault, they're in front of me and I should have checked that way again. But why the f would you stop with no cars coming? Blah

Aww man, sorry to hear that. Same exact thing happened to me a few years ago. I was driving (through Intercourse, actually), and there was a guy turning left in front of me. He went to pull out as there were absolutely no cars coming within an eighth of a mile, so I did a quick look both ways and started to pull out too. All of a sudden, crunch. Same deal there, yes it was technically my fault but these stupid Lancaster County retirees are so indecisive.

I did the same thing a long time ago on an onramp to Route 9 in Boston. Behind one car, she starts moving to merge on to the highway so I look back to see what's coming. Should be able to get two of us in before the oncoming traffic so I start moving and rear end her because she stopped for no apparent reason. My fault but why the f did you stop, there was plenty of room? This is Boston, don't effing hesitate!

Yeah brutal. I had enough time to pull out, back up and pull out again twice. So frustrating

I think everyone has had that happen to them. When I did it, there wasn’t any damage to either vehicle, so we went on our way. We pulled over and I got out and said, “What were you doing stopping?” to which the soccer mom replied, “I thought I saw a car coming.”

You were literally completed the turn and were on a completely new road!

In those situations I'd want to evaluate the overall condition of the car in front without regard to potential accident damage. If it's a junker, it could be an insurance play. "You big dummy, you rear ended me and totaled my car." More often it's just a case of the stupids on their part, however.
