They have an extremely low ceiling, but I think y’all are exaggerating how bad it’s going to be. Its a hopeless season, but it’s by no means going to be some historically bad record.

Basically, guaranteed to be one of the worst 5 teams in the league, but by no means a lock for the worst record in 2021. Which sucks of course, but competing to make the lowest win projection just indicates that you don’t pay attention to baseball

Troy, I think this is the worst Pirates team of our lifetime. I see they won 53 in 94 - maybe second worse. They're bad. Steven Brault is the ace and he's out for a month

"ace" is not really a relevant concept for this team, they have a group of interchangeable pitchers that are going to compete throughout the year for starts.

Granted if Newman and Reynolds are as dreadful as they were in 2020, then they could be a 110 loss team, but I think those two bounce back to some degree. It looks like Hayes is maturing into an anchor for the lineup, which raises the entire floor for the offense. They don't have a closer, which makes it difficult for them to win close games, which is of course a factor in why this is clearly a hopeless season.

I think I would just distinguish between hopelessness and dreadfulness. The former doesn't always confer the latter.

I would not consider optimism as disagreeing with predictions that they are going to lose 120 games.

Theyre not a lock to finish last but I would be astonished if they lost less than 100.

Yeah, I expect the Pirates to be bad, but probably not historically bad. They'll win a few getaway day snorers where the other team puts in a weak lineup just to rest their starters and the ol' Buccos can take advantage of that. 162 games is a long season; not all teams will give a **** about playing the Pirates, and already think ahead to their next series and so on.

if we get one bonadafide major leaguer out of Fowler, Alford, Evans, and Eric Gonazlez, i'd consider it a victory.

not sure which is crappier, the bullpen or the starting rotation
