Well, the national guys that are actually credible like Pete Thamel, etc are jumping onboard with this. Saying nothing is immenint and heck, with Texas's history, nothing may happen. But it appears there is interest on both sides. Said Texas has been looking for awhile, and an early sign that they may be serious about wondering was back in May when ESPN/Fox didn't want to discuss renewing the Big XII TV rights early.

When those national guys get into this, then sometimes there are legs. Unless it's Dennis Dodd. He sucks.

Makes absolutely no sense and doubt it's true. Especially with the playoff expansion. Then you got the issue with tech and okie state.

Imo just another rumor that someone is passing as breaking news.
My irony meter randomly exploded. I just now figured out why.

I just find it hard to believe that Okie is looking to move to a conference where it will be 1,000,000 x harder for them to show up in the playoff 3 out of every 4 seasons. Probably 9 out of 10 with the playoff expansion.

Can someone summarize the conference wars discussion?

Was it basically that all the good acc teams were going to go to the sec or big 12 because some unnamed posters needed to believe that wvu was in the better conference?

There is so much more guaranteed money for every school in the SEC. If anything, I am surprised by Texas' willingness to give up its de-facto independence (through the Longhorn Network) and join the structure where they will get "just" 1/16 of the (arguably giant) pie.

Ultimately, being the SEC proponent - hooray if that happens, though I would miss seeing Alabama and Auburn every year after they would inevitably move to SEC-East....

The reactions to that post are predictably along the lines "since when did you excel...?"

So Texas and Oklahoma have been negotiating with the SEC for 6 MONTHS(!!!) and nobody told A&M and the rest of Big12??? That's one of the most successful spy operations of all-times!

https://www.espn.com/college-football/s ... g-sec-move

My brain is all for it - Texas (and to a smaller degree, Oklahoma) will add both to the lobbying power of the SEC schools&states (something that Big10 excels in) and to the academic strength of the conference.
But my heart would so much like to say - go pound salt Texas! :D

If this messes up 12 team playoff happening sooner, I will root more against OK and Texas.

That will show them!

I'm still here. Their self interest killed the SWAC, killed the Big12, and now they want to move on again. They're locusts.

As far as the ACC goes ND can continue in their independency if it goes to 12 in the playoff. We've seen repeatedly that it doesn't hurt them at 4 in the playoff.

West Virginia makes the most sense for myriads of reasons for the ACC. Where that 16th comes from is a little more interesting.

16 is also a much better number than 14 as far as scheduling goes.

A lot of people for a while have been saying four 16-team super conferences was where this was headed.

Cinci/Memphis would be okay. Even Houston, but I suspect they go to whatever is left of the Big 12 if there are leftovers there.

Oklahoma State would be the best ACC fit out of the Big 12, but I can't see the ACC going that far west.

Memphis football attendance is hot garbage. Cincy does the most for both basketball/football, but they don't "feel" like a major school. Could see UCF before them.

Both SEC (personal experience) and ACC (based on what my friends told me) jacked up academic cooperation/lobbying collusion among conference members - thus emulating the Big10 strategy (Big10 generates large sums of money outside of athletics). So, I'd say ACC would take only a school that is a "major academic player". Oklahoma State, Cincy, UCF, Memphis absolutely do not play the "major player" role.

However, I am slightly surprised that there are no talks about Big10 possibly going after the few remaining "top flagships" out there - mainly Virginia and UNC. Because if they do...

Why’d they start college football today if they weren’t going to schedule any interesting matchups?
