Right now.We've got ourselves a good old fashioned write off off right here.
Do you remember 10-ish years ago when NHL teams got in the habit of skirting the salary cap by signing 34-year old free agents to 12-year contracts to thin out their cap hit? Dead cap is meant to prevent that by forcing teams to keep a player's unpaid guaranteed money on their books. (I think the NHL responded to the Marian Hossa type contracts by forcing a sort of dead cap for players over 35 who sign multi-year deals) That's my understanding of, anyway.I don't really understand it as I don't follow that closely.
What really confuses me is when a player is traded away and the cap hit stays with the old team. I think Philly is on the hook for some ridiculous dead cap amount for Wentz.
Ugh why?? This team has no shot at winning a ring. All this does is push back the inevitable rebuild another year.
Brees =/= dirtbagBrees renegotiated his salary from $25Mm down to the veteran minimum of $1.075MM while contemplating his future. Ben should do the same.
How does it work that they can reduce the salary so much? Add years to the contract that he won't play in?Brees =/= dirtbagBrees renegotiated his salary from $25Mm down to the veteran minimum of $1.075MM while contemplating his future. Ben should do the same.
Ben = dirtbag
Ben isn’t taking league min
I think it's literally a "we're keeping your current contract, scratching out the 2021 salary and writing in $1.075" kind of move.The Saints are one step closer to getting under the salary cap, according to a Friday night report. As first reported by Jason Fitzgerald at Over the Cap, the team has renegotiated Drew Brees' contract to free up nearly $24 million for the 2021 deficit. The move lowers his base salary to a little less than $1 million.
By bringing his salary down to the minimum the Saints will be able to hold his salary cap charge at $12.225 million while Brees ultimately decides his own future. If he retires the Saints can then hold him on the roster until June 1 and then place him on the retired list on June 2nd, allowing them to split his $22.65 million in dead money across two years- $11.15 million in 2021 and $11.5 million in 2022.
Someone answer this immediatelyIs it cheaper to cut him now?
