They all had strong stats in 2019. Contreras and Smith were in the SALLY at the time. Yajure was in A+ and actually threw 7 innings for the Yankees last year.

Best of the bunch could be 18 yr old 2B maikel escotto who has raw power and crushed the dominican league at 17.

So they dumped Musgrove, Taillon and Bell. They didn't really change the face of their top ten organizational prospect list, but the beefed up the top 30.

Between these trades and the Marte trade from before last season, and the big DSL class from 2019, it will be at least entertaining to look at the MLB box scores. This is tanking, beyond any level of tanking embarked on ever before, so they are guaranteed the top draft pick in 2022, and likely in 2023 as well. As soon as any player on the current MLB roster exhibits any level of competency, they will be shopped.

They basically have Hayes. Cruz is the only high profile prospect that could conceivably get promoted to the majors this season, so they wont even have those "future" guys to sell MLB tickets.

Keller and Reynolds to an extent too. Why is Frazier still on our team?

I'm still kind of reeling about the minors reconstruction. I can buy that most of the real players with a chance are known and you don't need that many teams. But it still feels like it will be hard to get the playing time in premium positions. You stock up on SS caliber guys but you have to be careful to get them reps. Anyway, it just sucks having so many less players to follow. I enjoyed that more than following the majors

They beefed up the top 30 with some guys that could quickly become top 10. Hopefully 18 months from now we're looking at a loaded system that baseball people love. Not beyond the possibility especially with two #1 picks forthcoming

Guys on the 40 man roster that are actually starters:

Brault
Kuhl
Crowe
Brubaker
Keller
“Cody Ponce”
Not sure why James Marvel isnt on the 40 man but he isnt? Is he even the organization?

Then again there are 8 pitchers who i dont really know who or what they are.

As far as the draft goes, pirates will get rocker at #1 and also have a supplemental pick after the second round. So you figure that the top 10 gets instantly better with rocker. I doubt that #2 and #2a pick will impact the top 30.

Not that this really has any bearing on anything, but if you're a WS or bust kind of fan, this is probably the time for a team to just tank for picks.

I don't think any team is getting through the NL until this Dodgers' core is broken up,

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2021-zips-p ... s-dodgers/

They pretty much breezed through the playoffs last year, they'll add David Price as back of the rotation guy, and Lux could still breakout as another elite talent, on top of Betts, Seager & Bellinger. So it makes sense why the Padres and Yankees are desperately trying to stock up.

And as soon as all of these prospects exhibit competency by 23 or beyond, they will be gone. It’s a **** neverending cycle. Until new ownership is found that actually wants to put a winner on the field, this is what Pirates fans will be stuck with.

Yes, but the Rays make it work. You can operate a team at this budget by trading guys at or near their peak value and having good player development. Huntington did neither.

There's a reason why the Rays bounce right back so quickly after a down year. Hell, they just traded Snell... his value will never be higher.

So Greensboro is hi-A now and Bradenton is lo-A?

Hmm. Will be interesting to see where guys land after not having played since 2019.

Going to be a lot of guys in extended ST id imagine.

Difference is that the Rays have a plan. The Astros had a plan. Even the Royals and A’s had plans. I wouldn’t have any confidence in Pirates management to have a competent plan. Could have capitalized on the string of wildcard runs but instead, they fizzled.

They did. New GM, there appears to be some semblance of a plan at the moment. Time will tell
