My problem with it is: these folks are not upset that she died. They are upset what her death means to them. Disingenuous isn’t the right word, but it is close.

My wife is prone to getting all jazzed up by her limousine liberal New England family. She did not appreciate my pragmatic response to the consequence of rbg dyin, when their fam text chain was going off the rails with end of the world chatter.

I appreciate everything that RBG accomplished and stood for... but she should have stepped down early in Obama’s presidency to allow someone that held her values take her place. It’s sort of shitty to say but it’s also true

Agreed. This isn't popular to say, but RBG definitely got wayyyyy too caught up in the celebrity stuff. She openly embraced the Notorious RBG mystique and didn't want to fade into irrelevancy.

Her ego set her ideological peers back many years.

Should she have stepped down earlier? Probably so, and hindsight makes a statement like that easy to make. However, she also earned and was given the right to make that decision on her own, and I doubt any of us really know what informed that decision.

Someone as smart and aware as RBG who was also an octogenarian who had already battled with multiple bouts of cancer certainly could and should of had the foresight to step down in time to preserve her legacy on the court. Only once since presidential term limits were installed has a two term president successfully passed the White House to his own party, and GHWB was ousted after one term.

Can she be as brilliant as we say but still make a mistake like that? Absolutely. The brilliance almost certainly assures it had to be a mistake; she can be flawed.
