I may have Googled "what happens if the president-elect dies" recently...

The rules of what happens when the nominee dies before the election are different in each party, and they are ugly. Thankfully, it's pretty straightforward with what happens if the POTUS-elect dies before the inauguration.

Mu understanding is nothing will happen until all the votes are tabulated and a winner determined in the electoral college or by House vote in the case of an EC tie. If the deceased candidate is the winner, their running mate automatically becomes POTUS-elect (presuming that they themselves are still in a position to execute the duties of the office, e.g. alive).

That's interesting...say Trump died right now, obviously Pence takes over. But then on Saturday morning he officially gets 270 votes. Does Pence serve the next four years since his name was on the ballot too? Or just finish the term until January 20th and then the party gets to pick?

Same deal with Biden, he is officially the president-elect and then dies before January 20th does Harris take over or does the party or Congress pick next President?

If POTUS-elect dies between winning the electoral college (or in the case of an EC tie, a vote in the House) and inauguration day, their running mate automatically assumes the role of POTUS-elect. It's a party-driven process, and thankfully both parties provide for the same relatively straightforward procedure.

How the replacement's VP would be designated I'm guessing is also a party process.
