How hummingbirds sleep is fascinating. For many species, their metabolisms are so high that if they just slept as other birds do, they would run a risk of starving to death before morning. So they actually go into torpor each night, which is close to hibernation. In involves a slowdown in metabolism, heartbeat, and respiration rate. Because they are functionally hibernating each night, it can take a long time for a hummingbird to wake up each morning—sometimes up to an hour.
There's a really good David Attenborough documentary on hummingbirds. It's free on Amazon Prime Video.
