Source of the post That was always Cowher's achilles heel, an above average QB.
I beg your pardon. Look at these stellar QBs from the Cowher era....

Now, take it back. By the way, it's kind of crazy that there were only 5 starting QBs during Cowher's run.
You had to include the pic of O'Donnell looking straight into Larry Brown's eyes, didn't you?
Isn't that how you remember him?

Lol playing real fast and loose with the words "starting QB"
Anyone else remember the 3-way qb race between Tomczak, Jim Miller, and Kordell Stewart? And somehow Jim Miller won it...
I was just about to throw a Jim Miller ref in here. Nice job.

Also, Todd Blackledge QB'd a Steelers team if I remember correctly. May have been before Cowher though.
Todd Blackledge was drafted ahead of Dan Marino.

Let me repeat that, because it doesn't sound like a thing that should be true: Todd Blackledge was drafted ahead of Dan Marino.

You know how they say the '83 draft class was super-rich with QBs? People saying this do not often include Todd Blackledge in that reckoning.

For some reason I always remember Rick Strom. In part because I thought it was so cool a guy could get paid to be on a football team and not have to play (QB3), and also because he was an available player in one of the Techmo Bowls. He was on the depth chart during the Brister/O'donnell times.

Of all what if’s in Pittsburgh sports, the what if the Steelers drafted Dan Marino is the greatest what if of all.

I personally think we at least beat the Cowboys in the Super Bowl. And Dan Marino probably is viewed as the greatest of all time with a ring or two

But what about 1st round draft pick Mark Malone? Why would they want to block him? In all seriousness, I believe that was their thinking back then. Otherwise, Marino would have been a Steeler.

I must be remembering wrong. I though the '84 draft was when the Steelers took that dude that paralyzed himself in that car accident instead of Marino.

My recollection is the same as dodint's. Marino had a sub-par senior year (this is back when QBs actually had senior years, mind you), and there were rumors that he indulged in certain..... appetites, which tanked his stock.

And it was the '83 draft. But yes, that was the year they drafted a guy who paralyzed himself in a DUI before taking a single snap.

There was a rumor that Marino liked the white stuff. Which...maybe. But I don’t think it was an issue, but it was made an issue

There’s a 30 for 30 on that draft from the eyes of the agent who represented both Marino and Elway. It’s pretty awesome

I seem to remember seeing a 30-4-30 on the '83 QB draft class, but I don't remember it being that granular. I shall endeavor to seek it out.

I can’t find the tweet now, but I saw earlier that Juju is tied for 1st in the league in 3rd down receptions. I had assumed as much.

He’s been pretty clutch in those situations.

I only remember Lipps from Tecmo.

Was Eric Green the one with drug issues. He actually went to rehab at the place my mom worked back in the early 90s. I remember foolishly asking her if she could take me to work so I could meet him.

I wonder if having him would have made a difference in XXX. Doubt it.

My only early childhood memories of Eric Green is that my dad hated him. Trip to Wikipedia makes it easy to see why:
He initially held out for 54 days, causing him to miss training camp, preseason, and the opening game of the 1990 NFL season.
On November 9, 1992, Green received a six-game suspension for violating the National Football League's drug policy. The league did not say which part of the policy that Green violated, but did confirm that it was not for steroids. At the time of the suspension, players who tested positive for steroids received a six-game suspension. Although the league would not confirm, this was the second time Green had violated the drug policy.
After a Pro Bowl season in 1993 season where Green achieved career highs in receptions (63), yards (942), and yards per reception (15.0), Green chose to hold out at the beginning of the 1994 season. "I want to be compensated for what I've done, but the Steelers weren't prepared to do that," said the 290-pound Green, the NFL's biggest tight end.[4] With the ultimatum of either signing with the Steelers or miss the opening weekend game against the Dallas Cowboys, Green signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract on September 1, 1994. Green had rejected the Steelers earlier offer of a $10 million contract and took the lower offer to ensure his right to free agency after the season.
On March 11, 1995, Green signed a six-year, $12 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. At the time of the signing, Green's contract made him the highest paid tight end in NFL history. Green had also visited with the Raiders prior to signing with the Dolphins, but they did not make him an offer.

On July 9, 1996, Green was released from the Miami Dolphins. His weight problems and work ethic caused then-coach Jimmy Johnson to release Green from the team, which terminated his six-year, $12 million contract.
:slug:

There was also this little nightmare tidbit:
Green signed the day after the season opening game, but did not play until week five. When Green did return to the Steelers lineup, his impact was immediately noticed. The Steelers offense did not score a touchdown until Green returned to the lineup. When he returned, he caught five of Bubby Brister's seven touchdown passes.
Glad I have no memories of early 90s Steelers football.

Eric Green features in my memory as an absolute gigantic human being. Too lazy to look up how he compares to other tight ends, but thinking back to my high school years, he seemed to stand out as freakishly large for the time. Like "How many calories does he have to eat to move one of his legs?" large.
