9/11 Anniversary
Didn't really feel like this belonged in another thread. I had never saw this one, but the tears were flowing freely early this morning. RIP Welles, and all of the others killed that day.
9/11 Anniversary
I don't mean this in a bad way by any means, but Ladder to Heaven pops into my head everytime I hear 9/11.

Yeah that's a great story. Hard not to shed a tear watching it

9/11 Anniversary
Every year I get to see new stories or videos I had never known before, and others that I read every year. This is a new one for me - thanks for sharing.

Can't believe it's been 19 years. I remember that entire day vividly like it was yesterday.
I watched that red bandana (or something similar) on the ACC network this summer. They did a great job on it.

I was just going to post this same thing. I had saw this video, but new for me this year was Joe Pfeifer (the FDNY BC in command) talking about how he had something like 40 plus visits to eye doctors to pull steel chards out of his eyes. Also mentioned how chaotic that day was that he couldn't even let his family know he was OK until 6 hours later and didn't even see them until 10pm that night. He also lost his brother in the collapse.Every year I get to see new stories or videos I had never known before, and others that I read every year. This is a new one for me - thanks for sharing.

This is the first year I told my son (6) about the tragedy. It's very surreal to speak to somebody who has no clue what happened that day.

9/11 Anniversary
Every year, on this day, I say "I hate this day", and I spend the entire day feeling gut-punched. That day was one of the worst days of my life. Every year since, I feel the same emotions, same sickness, same despair I felt on that day. I don't think that will ever change.
Last year, we finally got to go to the 9/11 memorial in New York City. It is one of the most powerful, impactful places I've ever been in my life.

I skipped (well, convinced my mom I needed a mental day, really) school that day. Seemed like a moot point since they sent everyone home in the afternoon anyway. Lived in Maryland at the time, and between this and the DC sniper days, my folks were probably out of their mind with worry all the time.

Some recommended viewing: The Looming Tower miniseries was an excellent look at the inability of various government agencies to work together to stop the attacks. I think it was on Hulu a couple of years ago.
United 93 is a tough watch, but worthwhile. It's on Netflix and HBO Max right now. Let's roll.

I was 18 and in class at what was then Computer Tech (later the International Academy of Design and Technoogy) along Grant Street downtown when it happened. I don't remember panic right away. I remember watching it unfold on a little tv that was sitting on a roll cart in the corner of our class room..and everyone was just silent . Then everyone just basically grabbed their stuff and left.
Getting out of town that day via bus was a cluster. (I took the bus in and out back then) I remember there being lots of talk on the streets downtown while waiting for a bus that there was a plane headed towards Pittsburgh etc.
I went to work that night at Iggle Video at Giant Eagle...and it was just eery. The store was practically empty.

I was in Pittsburgh for 9/11, but was living in St. Mary's county during the DC sniper days. The word terrorist was thrown around loosely those days, but anytime I saw a white van with no windows, alarms would sound in my mind. Couldn't even pump gas without needing a paper bag nearby to hyperventilate in.Source of the post Lived in Maryland at the time, and between this and the DC sniper days

10th Grade, and I remember it making it way down the halls and the TVs coming on shortly after the first building was hit.
Then I remember around noon, my math teacher turned the TV off and said it wasn't school appropriate. I never liked her after that.
Then I remember going home after 12:30, because our school was huge, and was only an two hours away from Somerset, and I remember them worried about us being a big target (even though looking back, what a crazy thought).

I was a dog walker in lower MoCo and DC during the sniper. Good times...I skipped (well, convinced my mom I needed a mental day, really) school that day. Its such a somber day. I honestly feel guilty doing anything fun, like I'm cheating on all those who sacrificed.Every year, on this day, I say "I hate this day", and I spend the entire day feeling gut-punched. That memorial is unbelievable. I remember going there while it was still under construction and you could feel the energy even then. Now its 100x that, with peoples pictures and flowers and flags on their engraved names on the fountains... i didn't want to leave.

11th grade year was delayed due to high school renovations, so I was still sleeping when it first started. Woke up and turned on Sportscenter and the ticker at the bottom said plane flies into WTC. My first thought was what dope in a small plane is flying through NYC and crashes into the WTC. Turned it over to ABC and honestly, I don't remember much else of the day.

8th grade, I was transitioning from Spanish class to Geometry right around the time the South tower was struck. My family had taken a trip to NYC over labor day weekend 2001 and visited the towers, I felt like that gave me a far greater understanding of the impact of what just happened having stood on those grounds about 10 days prior.

I was in college, was sleeping when it happened. I was in an off-campus apartment at Pitt, my friend's dad owned the place, we had the top floor and other friends lived on the bottom. I remember a lot from that day, for one I didn't want my class that day to be cancelled because I was struggling with a writing assignment. A class that I had no business electing to be in and ended up having to withdraw. Friends were in the downstairs apartment all day watching coverage, I had a crappy job at the cafe/deli in Children's that I had to go to. I remember some doctor coming down and talking about warships being positioned off the american coast. That idiot, then when I got home, people were still at the downstairs apartment watching coverage, and they bought Busch and American beer.

If you've never been to the Flight 93 Memorial I highly recommend you go. Not today, as Orange Man and Senile Guy are doing photo ops there, but any other time of year it's a very powerful place. The way they did the trajectory to the impact crater gets me every single time.
