9/11 Anniversary

The sounds of several hundred PASS alarms all going off at once still haunts me to this day. I can only imagine what that was like for the firefighters knowing that there were countless fallen comrades within close distance and there was nothing they could do for them.

Apparently the PASS alarms just kept going until their batteries died.

If you've never been to the Flight 93 Memorial I highly recommend you go. Not today, as Orange Man and Senile Guy are doing photo ops there, but any other time of year it's a very powerful place. The way they did the trajectory to the impact crater gets me every single time.

Orange Man flew into Jtown about 2 hrs ago. Friend of mine saw AF1 landing from his parking lot.

Not sure if Senile Guy flew in earlier or will be there later today.

I was in 7th grade, enrolled at Butler Intermediate High School. The older I get the more I get irritated on how the school handled the events. They hid it from us, and acted like it didn't happen. We went through the whole day as normal. I recall hearing before lunch about the towers coming down but had no idea it was a terror attack until well after lunch. Finally the art teacher I had at the time said something along the lines of they, the district, doesn't want you to see this but this is important. The teacher wheeled out a TV for us and we watched the news. I'll never understand why they hid it from us, and frankly I'd prefer not to hear their reasoning.

Our neighbors in MD loved Busch, and was their beer of choice. Not sure why, lol. One of them was definitely and alcoholic, though, so price point probably contributed. This guy would come home after work on a Friday with a 30 pack of Busch, and on Sunday morning he'd be going out for more.

I visited friends in NYC in early 2002, when ground zero was still very much a "construction" site. There was a church very near (I believe it was across the street and somehow the building survived unscathed) that had been turned into a makeshift museum. Many of the flags, missing person flyers, steel shrapnel, etc. were housed there. I felt it important to see in person the magnitude of the site & to see the sheer volume of missing person flyers, but we didn't stay long. As you can imagine, it was incredibly unnerving to be there so soon after everything.

I can't get over the pictures of people jumping out of the towers. I can't imagine the fear it would take to make jumping a better fate than staying inside.

On a related note, my sister was friends with a NYFD firefighter. He told her that several firetrucks and police cars were destroyed by the impact(s) of multiple bodies hitting them at terminal velocity.

What's unreal here is that even after confirming (with footage) that a second plane hit the tower, the anchor postulates that perhaps a navigating/electronics error caused two planes to crash into the WTC. Just goes to show the absolute panic and speculation happening.

My high school gave all students the option of leaving if they wanted to, so of course I left. Sitting at home watching the news, I heard a plane overhead. This was terrifying of course, as all planes were ordered to ground. I went out and saw a large commercial looking plane flanked by two fighter jets. I later learned that this was AF1.

I know there are a ton of stories from survivors, but it's always interesting to me when I find a new one. I came across this today and it seemed like a unique perspective (from a photographer and not a fireman, office worker, etc.).

Yeah, this has always stuck with me from that day. I was at work goofing around in IRC when it happened. Saved the logs from that day, and it’s surreal to reach everyone’s thoughts on what was going on at the time.

Speaking of ‘never forget’, somebody remind the treasury department that the $4m they took from the first responders should probably be given back. You know, unless they forgot.

My oldest had just turned one year old in June. I was at work at Marconi Communications (formerly FORE Systems) in Warrendale. I was on a conference call with a switch enclosure manufacturer when he said... hey we need to cut this short, something's going on in New York, let's pick the discussion up later. At that point they were starting to indicate that it was something bigger than a small plane.

We went down to the cafeteria where there were two huge TV's. Watching the towers come down is etched in my mind. Totally weird drive home to go hug my wife and kid, not knowing what this was or how it would affect his and our lives.

I'm usually pretty good about holding it together but when we went to the Flight 93 memorial with the kids a few years ago I just couldn't. It's hard to imagine my college junior doesn't remember it and my other two kids were not around yet. If they didn't get the effect of that day before, they did then.

I was in 4th grade (almost 10). They didn't tell us anything, just that a bunch of after-school stuff was cancelled. I found out when my mom picked me up at the bus stop.
