my reaction to this news sums up my reaction to pitt hoops in general.

he was a good player but also very counter productive, resulting in less than desirable results. did not get better in 3 seasons.

the team will be worse without him, yet the team was not good with him. that statement doesn't make sense, but it is true.

this is the way
Agree. He has talent. But from day 1, the dude focused more on flopping, talking sh*t, and trying to be a hero. I was never a fan of his. I'm really not sad by this.

But man, does Capel need to get something moving on next years class, whether through recruits or transfers.

**** him.

With that being said, this is another mark in the L column for Capel. Couldn’t coach Johnson. Couldn’t coach McGowens. Massive recruiting issues. Players are either stealing cars or getting hit by them. Things are not going well. If Champagne leaves after the season year four of the Capel era could very well be as bad as the end of the Stallings era, so back to square one we go after accomplishing nothing for three years.

Meanwhile, Marcus Carr is an absolute stud at Minnesota, Parker Stewart proved to be a solid outside shooter, and Bryce Golden is a solid paint presence for Butler. Other than diamond in the rough Champagne, I’m not convinced that Capel has managed to upgrade this roster.

Yeah, the Capel hire is not looking good for Heather.

I just searched "capel" using the search feature and lets just say there are some freezing cold takes.

I’m sure there is. This program was down and out and managed to get a big name Duke assistant to come in. Exciting times until he needs to start doing his job.

I'm not ready to write Capel off yet. He had a tough job, and that first class of XJ, Toney, and McGowens was thrown together last minute. Carr was leaving regardless because Pitt was such a mess.

I think people get these notions in their head that everything is easy and there should be quick turnarounds. In reality those are few and far between.

That said, I think it's worrisome we have no recruits for next year. And Capel has now been here for 3 years. You'd think there would be some better relationships build with the high school pipelines for Pitt.

To me, he has 2 more seasons to make the tourney, and if he doesn't, then it's time to move on.

I have less an issue with recruiting than the lack of in-game coaching and player development.

They've gotten better each year he's been here. They were in a really bad spot when he took over. Stallings was a de facto death penalty. Certainly player development could be better, then I look at a guy like Champagnie and think they do a decent job in some spots. Next year is a big year, need a winning record in the league

They were better this year but still had way too many wet fart games.

They most certainly will not be better next year. X is gone, Penny is most likely gone, Hugley is gone, and the following high reputation recruits are coming to campus:

Realistically, after the Stallings era, was Pitt even a destination? Players don't even really seem to want to go to a rebuilder anymore. Go to the winning/up and coming program with a ton of visibility.

College basketball is broken right now, for sure. The Transfer Portal is a much bigger issue due to the size of rosters.

Basically, its a bigger deal in college basketball than college football due to the size of the rosters.

Plus, the juggling around of rosters has a larger impact in basketball.

It's only an issue if you have a team and culture that players don't want to be a part of imo

This just means our 2021 recruiting class with have plenty of opportunity to earn minutes. As a reminder, that recruiting class consists of:

What the ****? I don’t get it. None of these guys are that good. Capel doesn’t seem very difficult to play for because X spent two and a half years getting away with dumb **** and then quit shortly after Capel had enough of his ****. I remember Toney wanting to transfer after his freshman season and Capel convinced him to stay, but what the ****.

Rumor mill on the PL pay site is X and Toney have been at odds with Champaigne over some off the court stuff and it has gotten to a boiling point and exploded. And Capel took Champaigne's side and stuck up for him.

But this is a mess.

You know that you could have had Jamie Dixon for life, but for (many) Pitt fans, he was inadequate because he could not get past Round X of NCAA *National* Tournament!

Is that the pineapple talking?

Dissing Pitt's most successful coach in its two major sports over the past 40 years is a bad take. A very very very bad take.
