What a lackluster game
I have a take assuming we hold on. They were feeling their oats a bit after beating up Austin Pee and needed a reality check. Better to have it this week and come prepared vs Louisville than beat up Cuse and come out flat next week

Pretty underwhelming game and to think if they could make a FG it still would have been a 20 point win

2019 issues came back up. But a win is a win. Need to clean that up.

Let's get this out of the way first. The defense is an absolute blast to watch & they'll be a problem for pretty much everyone they play this year. Syracuse's offense isn't good but when you hold a P5 team to 171 yards of total offense and 69 of that comes on one play thanks to a busted coverage, you're doing something very right. They're obviously not going to do this to everyone they play but they're going to give most teams fits. Weaver played a great first game back. Kalijah Clancy is a monster. Thank God Paris Ford came back.

I'll take the win, obviously, but my biggest takeaway from this game is that EVERY CORRECTABLE ISSUE we saw with the offense in 2019 reared its stupid head again. Too many dumbass illegal formation penalties. Poorly-timed and even more poorly-executed screen/swing passes. Too many dropped passes, including one for the 2nd week in a row that cost them a TD. The kicking game is a nightmare. They failed to establish a threat in the running game. And once they got up by two possessions, Whipple again went ultra-conservative with the playbook. Seven f'ing points in the second half.

1. Hopefully Daniel Carter isn't hurt. Good Davis got 19 touches for 92 total yards and that's fine but if Whipple plans on going conservative when up in the second half, they're going to need Carter because he appears to be the only back capable of really moving the pile off-tackle.

2. I've Seen Enough, Part I: AJ Davis. I was hoping against all evidence that he'd have some sort of Darrin Hall-esque evolution into a more complete back, but it's not going to happen. Abanikanda only lined up in the backfield for three plays Saturday. True freshmen typically struggle to pick up blocking schemes, so maybe that's why. Sibley can't seem to elevate himself outside of getting wildcat carries, so I have no idea what's going on there. If Carter isn't healthy, I'd much rather see Sibley and Abanikanda get chances this weekend.

3. I've Seen Enough, Part II: Alex Kessman. The botched hold obviously wasn't his fault and I know he didn't miss the 45-yd FG by much. But holy hell, the 37-yarder he missed so badly I thought he was trying to park the f'ing thing in the Strip District. I hope I'm wrong, he gets it together and two months from now he's giving Clemson fans flashbacks. If they turned to Sauls against Louisville, I wouldn't have an issue at all.

4. I thought Pickett played a decent enough game and I think the wideouts have some upside. Addison is the best freshman receiver they've had since Tyler Boyd; he's been everything we were led to believe he'd be. DJ Turner has been a nice surprise. Wayne looks to be very dependable. If they can get and keep Mack healthy (which may be a big "if"), that gives them a pretty solid top five. As good as he is, I hate the idea of relying so heavily on Addison to make the passing game go.

5. Krull was visible for too many of the wrong reasons. Catch the f'ing ball. Pickett did miss him badly on a route that would've at least been a big gain if not a TD, but the two drops are just awful.

6. I really want to see how the o-line develops over the next three games. From the standpoint of establishing the running game, I'm not optimistic.

Overall, it was a lackluster, unremarkable win. I'm not even bothered so much by the score. If Bad Davis catches the stupid wheel route and if Kessman makes one stupid field goal, Pitt walks out of there at 31-10.

But that's the problem - I can't make that argument because those things and the stuff mentioned above are the kinds of things that haven't been happening. Those are the kinds of things that have held this offense back too many times for more than THREE F'ING YEARS now, and it doesn't seem to be getting consistently better. I know the defense is good, but they can't keep on relying on them to bail this offense out drive after driver and game after game.

Amen Stoosh!

Besides the win, the other upside to me was winning $100. I took Cuse to cover fully expected the above to happen.

Yeah, I wonder how much of the offense is a QB problem. It blows my mind why he has to keep running to the sideline as a Senior.

While an excellent Stoosh post as always, you really undersold how shitty the offensive line has been.

Per Pitt Twitter and some things he posted himself of Twitter, Krull may have suffered an MCL injury against 'Cuse.

Looks like he deleted his tweet, but that sounds par for Pitt. Krull's injury belies something else that continues to drive me insane with this coaching staff. Walk-on Morrissey is the best offensive line recruit, but how the hell is it possible to not bring in one competent TE, recruiting or transfer, in five years? Just two positions that have been complete messes.

Good Davis officially listed as the starter at RB on the two-deep and Tre Tipton dropped down to third string behind Shockey and DJ Turner.

This really is the dichotomy of being a Pitt fan. Paul Chryst recruited the defensive side of the ball like he had never heard of defense before, but he could recruit the hell out of the offensive line and tight end positions, bringing in guys like Bisnowaty, Dorian Johnson, O'Neill (always destined to move to O-line), Holtz, Orndoff, Officer, and Bookser. Now we have Narduzzi, who has recruited and developed an elite-level defense but has turned the offensive line and tight ends into black holes.

This is got to be some sort of corollary of the rule that states Pitt can have several elite players in its history, but their respective Pitt careers can never completely overlap.

Regarding the offensive line, kudos to Morrissey as he may have honestly worked his way into an NFL career. Warren, Hargrove, Houy, Van Lynn, and Drexel are all at least redshirt juniors; those guys are what they are and probably won't get markedly better. I do think Kradel shows some promise. I've also read that Zubovic is expected to take over the center job next year. I've heard good things about Goncalves. I don't know that he beats out Hargrove at any point this year, but we'll see. I also think these more recent classes have brought in better recruits. Statham had offers from LSU, Michigan, and Michigan State. Honorable was drawing SEC interest, Enos has a pretty good mix of regional P5 offers, and there are rumors that Dorian Ford will ultimately move to offensive line.

At tight end, the common denominator there has been Tim Salem, but I also think they're still digging out from under the pile of crap that Shawn Watson's two years here dumped on the position as far as the perceptions of recruits were concerned. Gragg and Griffin-Stewart did nothing to help that last year. Given his unimpressive debut, it's tough to say that Krull's potential absence is much of a loss. It may be Kyi Wright's show right now, and I'll be interested to see what he can do. I think his drop against Austin Peay was more of a "I can't believe I'm this open" moment than anything.
