Video games were always a side hobby. My friends and I were outside playing sports 7 days a week growing up.

Sounds good. Most of the kids I see anymore at least have very strong thumbs from using their phone. And they don't like it when I yell at them to get off my grass.

The addition of create a player moves it past NHL 94 for me. It did have the broken, take the puck behind the net and the goalie’s own guy will interfere with him for your easy score mechanic though.

Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
NHL 94 (SNES)
NHL 98 (PC)
Hmmm...I guess Super Mario Bros (NES) because that was my start in video games, I beat it when I was 3 or 4 and played it a zillion times thereafter probably...

We didn't have Tecmo Bowl but we did have NES Play Action Football with the diagonal top-down view of the field.

How about through the years:

Al Unser Jr's Turbo Racing/Bill Elliot's NASCAR Challenge
OG Mario Kart
High school was playing outside
GoldenEye
Halo

And +1 to MR25 and Play Action Football, which didn't have any play action if I recall.

chuck yeagar's air combat
In retrospect, I should've had Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer on my list. When I interviewed at EA a couple years ago, they had a demo of this playing on a loop in the lobby, and I actually got a little verklempt.
