Be interesting to see in a month. If the 15-20% HIT is correct, then the USA will most likely have significantly fewer cases, but countries in Europe that weren't hit hard would get the "second" wave.

One of the first school districts in the country to reopen its doors during the coronavirus pandemic did not even make it a day before being forced to grapple with the issue facing every system actively trying to get students into classrooms: What happens when someone comes to school infected?

Just hours into the first day of classes on Thursday, a call from the county health department notified Greenfield Central Junior High School in Indiana that a student who had walked the halls and sat in various classrooms had tested positive for the coronavirus.

It’s harder for middle and high schools, but kids in elementary schools absolutely must remain in the same classroom throughout the day. Ours is obviously doing that, and it sounds like they’re going to use the gym as the lunch room. The cafeteria is attached to it, so logistically it should work out well.

As we get closer to our start back date, I’m less and less convinced we should be doing it. We haven’t been given many details on how distancing will work, other than a line of tape in the hallway, reduced bus capacity, and less students. Not sure how close I can get to students or they can get to each other. Aside from that, the actual academic plan is burdensome, to say the least. Teach live, then also post a video by 8am each day for that lesson. Our principal isn’t letting us live cast. So we basically double the work. They’ve also expanded our day by 30 minutes to allow for temp checks. Any teacher who was on the fence will certainly be out soon.

As much as I think its absolutely necessary to get these kids back in person, I think a 9 week delay should be ok. The weather is still nice so they won't be necessarily cooped up inside for that time. Just, talking with my wife about what her in person plan would be, it just doesn't seem like it would prevent much.

She listened to the PPS board meeting stream yesterday and a board member made the point that "how much sense does it make that we can't even have in person board meetings but we are expecting them to spend all day together in person"

My wife and I have been full work from home since March. My company has basically been setting up reopen dates since June... Plan was volunteers for the first wave then rotation based after that. Every time we've gotten to about 2 weeks before the rollout date, they've moved it back. The latest one was to be mid August, and we found out Thursday that all offices will remain closed for 2020. So Jan 2021 is now the earliest we'll be back.

Then my wife found out yesterday that while their office has been considered closed indefinitely...it will be permanent. She's going to be full time WFH even after all of this.

She's already spouting redecorating plans for her office.

We're fortunate enough to have the room in our house to accommodate both of us being here. I can't imagine what we'd be doing if we still lived in our apartment or townhouse.

Out of the Blackhawk return plan the thing that makes me most uneasy is the busing. 2 kids per seat limit... uh that ain't socially distanced. Fortunately I drive my middle schooler and my high schooler drives himself.

I agree with KC, do the first 9 weeks remote. There should have been time to get adequate lesson planning in, my middle schooler especially learned zippy after they went remote in the spring.

I think they need to put a heavy, heavy focus on setting up 1:1 time for each student. Even once a week a 15 minute Skype meeting between teacher and student. Base half the grade on showing up to that meeting... that would be big for the inner city kids and the harder to reach kids

No way this is feasible. mrs meow has 150 math students. At 15 minutes each, that is 37.5 hours. There is next to nothing that can be accomplished in 15 minutes

The BBC is reporting that Russia will begin a mass vaccination campaign against coronavirus in October, according to statements made by health minister Mikhail Murashko. I think it’s a good idea theoretically, but trying to actually carry it out would be tough, and also think each teacher would need to contact for it to be meaningful.

Evidently, my kids will be getting EBT cards in the amount of $330 each because they attend schools that receive free or reduced lunch. Part of the CARES act.

A lot of studies and labs saying somewhere between 40-60% of people already have some protection against this virus.

Obviously I am not an expert, but if true, This is why I don’t believe the USA will have another big outbreak after this subsides.
