Allegheny County Update 7/31 - 8,094 Total Cases (+244 Cases, +33 Hospitalizations, +4 Death)
Numbers look bad but this also looks like a data dump.
The date of positive tests ranged from June 30 through July 30
The deaths only span July 23-July 29 which seems more in line with reporting norms. The county does not reveal the range of hospitalizations.
Also, long term care facilities are sadly getting hit hard again.
The new cases reported today represent at least 77 known to be among long-term care residents and staff at this time.
Friday is a data dump day recently. Been that way for the last couple weeks.

This is just the Moderna vaccine. If the Oxford one is successful, it could be available by end of September for high risk and healthcare workers. We could legit have a vaccine available to the general public by the end of the year or beginning of next.
I’ll be one of the first in line to get it when I can.

Yes the last 2 fridays here they reported 2200 and 2600 tests. The bad news is its been jacking up the 7d average so we're basically more flat than decrease.

Had my COVID test yesterday. Today my f'ing nose is irriated from the swab. Damnit.
Our Chief Medical Officer told our testers that if blood doesn't come back on the swap, you probably didn't do it deep enough
That seems... extreme.
I think it was tongue in cheek, but he made his point of "that thing has to get in there" pretty clear
I know there are a few newer, less invasive tests, but I highly doubt they're widespread right now. My work or my wife's work may actually have/use them.
I had what they said was the test with the shorter swab and they said the other is much more invasive.

Sounds good to me. I can just barely remember a few things from my college days and social distancing wasn't included. With what is happening now, on-line higher education is the way to go, at least to this ole boomer.

Just got off a Zoom Virtual Town Hall hosted with our new president. We're all in on opening face to face in a few weeks. As I mentioned earlier - and she basically said it twice during the meeting - the only reason we were able to keep staff after refunding room and board fees in the spring was the CARES grant from the government. Without it, and we would've lost staff and faculty.
As there probably won't be any more of that money coming, we have to be open (face to face class, open) for us to stay afloat financially.
And parents are already asking for reduced tuition because their kids are going fully online as they don't want to come back to campus.

Yep, we are in same position. Been told there's a new update coming Monday, but basically if we don't do face to face, there will be layoffs coming. I still haven't been brought back since March. Going to be interesting

Outbreak on Fraternity Row at USC. 40+ cases ID'd this week.

And all 40+ will be fine.
They didn't report the breakdown of how many were students vs staff vs summer sublessees etc. It's just showing how close quarters living in a school/university environment is massively increasing the risk of spread. SC and UCLA both have had around 150 cases among students/faculty/staff since March, and in both cases roughly 1/3 of them have been ID'd this month, which way outstrips the rate of increase in testing.

Considering the fastest to public vaccine is something like 4 years yes, it would be really incredible.

The previous fastest time to market for a vaccine is 4 years. The 18 month tineframe wasn't a prediction so much as it was the best-case scenario as the fastest we could reasonably expect a vaccine if absolutely everything broke favorably during development and testing.
Granted, there's never been this kind of focused direction of resources and money towards developing a vaccine like we're seeing now. But I've never had had anything like a belief or expectation that we'd have a vax anytime before 2022. If we do, I said earlier that it will be one of the greatest achievements in human history.

It also helped that scientists were able to utilize existing research as a base for a lot of this. Here's hoping that their work pulls through and we get past this. I'm well past over this horseshit.
