COVID-19

Postby Troy Loney » Fri Dec 04, 2020 12:45 pm

Pfizer chairman Albert Bourla told Dateline host Lester Holt that the pharmaceutical company was “not certain” if the vaccine prevented the coronavirus from being transmitted, saying, “This is something that needs to be examined.”

In a prime-time special titled “Race for a Vaccine” set to air Thursday, Holt questioned Bourla and other individuals involved in the development and distribution of the medicine.
That seems like an important thing to know.
This is the question I asked a couple days ago. If post-vax people can pick up the virus and carry enough of it to be transmissible, but have enough antibodies to prevent actual infection in themselves.
So really, there is a lot of potential for things to get shitty during the vaccination period

I'm guessing this depends on the amount that get vaccinated and, of course, the continued study of it's efficacy.

If everyone gets it before the vaccine, then it won't matter, right?

Wait pink eye is a symptom?
at one point there was a theory that they could determine how the virus entered your body based on whether you had pink eye, loss of smell or loss of taste. no idea what happened to that theory.

Never mind the preposterous number of deaths that herd immunity via infection would inevitably lead to.

I guess 3 months is better than nothing. Kinda hoping for more.

Is that misleading? Has there been more than 3 months pass to see if it extends longer? I feel like next month the headline will be for at least 4 months

Some more local flavor for you:

I ordered Mexican take out last night, and was told it was a 35 minute wait. That's unheard of for this place.

I go to pick it up and the parking lot is full, and the restaurant is packed. We do not have indoor eating restrictions in place. I've been going to this place for ten years, and it was as busy as it's ever been for a random Thursday night. No spacing, obviously people eating without masks on.

On my way home, the big Baptist church lot is full and the overflow lot is half full. Not sure what was going on there, but knowing the types of folks that attend Southern Baptist churches in my area, probably not a whole lot of mask wearing going on inside. This is the sister church that had a big tent revival a month or two ago and caused its preschool to shut down, and a handful of people to get hospitalized and 1-2 died from it.

We're doomed.

Youth sports have been hit with few coronavirus outbreaks so far. Why is ice hockey so different?
Ice hockey is an anomaly. Scientists are studying hockey-related outbreaks hoping to find clues about the ideal conditions in which the coronavirus thrives — and how to stop it. Experts speculate that ice rinks may trap the virus around head level in a rink that, by design, restricts airflow, temperature and humidity.

The hockey-related cases have been especially striking, epidemiologists have said, because clubs followed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention limits on gathering size and had numerous social distancing measures in place. In retrospect, one mistake by some clubs was that until recently masks had been required on ice for only the two players doing the initial faceoff for the puck — although many players wore clear face shields, which theoretically should have a similar effect.

Well, I meant me and my family, yes.

And the daily SC numbers came out...largest one day total of new positive cases, 21.4% positive on a high number of tests. Things are going well.

I'm not sure you can compare since the NHL playoffs took place in a complete bubble.

Good point. Hopefully it can get up to 6 or 7 months, at least.

I was just kidding, although 1% is not accurate at all. Just the 15M confirmed cases makes up nearly 5% and that's not to mention there were likely 4-5x that uncofirmed. Probably around 50-60M total infected so really its upwards of 20%. Christ, nearly 1% of allegheny is infected every day right now.

Since somebody asked about UPMC's vaccine a few weeks back, they're now taking signups for the trial.

There are 350 million people in the country with about 14.5 million positive cases. 4.5% I am mistaken.

Why? The study wants to show how hockey affects Covid. Not how their bubble format affects it.
