"flulike coronavirus symptoms"

Is that different than just coronavirus symptoms? Don't they have similar symptoms?

COVID has a wide array of possible symptoms. Looks like the point here was to show that there was a jump from the rather benign flu-like symptoms to neurological complications resulting in death.

I know I want people to die and stuff and hate old people, but there's got to be more going on here.

Tonia Maxcy, a family friend who taught Chad Dorrill in high school, said doctors told the family that they suspected he had a previously undetected case of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks nerves. Many viruses can trigger the syndrome, and there have been cases linked to Covid-19.

If taken as true; he lived with it for 19 years and then COVID came and he's dead.

Is this one of those mislabeled cases where COVID didn't do it?

I keep seeing the "only 6%" line being spewed in comment sections.

Sounds like covid activated the GBS. He'd probably be alive if not for getting a virus that triggered it though. Weird though, I hadn't really heard of much mortality associated with GBS anyway.

GBS can definitely kill. Viruses can trigger it, vaccines have been possibly linked it it in the past. It is definitely rare but it does happen.

I’m pleasantly surprised with State College and the surrounding area. There’s been a huge spike in cases at penn state but it seems as though it’s been concentrated to only the students. Last I read only one employee has tested positive and it doesn’t look like it’s spreading much to the schools in the area nor the community.

I think the numbers sky rocketing on campus was enough for people to stay the f away from downtown and/or take it seriously and stay away from people.

I don't necessarily think that it is a good idea to have on campus learning at universities right now, but there is no doubt that schools and sports leagues should be providing us with a lot more info on how the virus spreads

That's interesting, and would be a good thing if it turns out to be true. However, unless we were able to determine who could possible transmit it then I don't think it changes much. Everyone still needs to wear a mask, socially distance, etc.

The worst thing about social media is that it shoots firsts and ask questions later.

For all we know, 5 years from now we could find out that it wasn't that contagious because of what this study shows. However, the danger right now is the unknown and while we don't know 100% how it's spread, we know 100% how to keep it from spreading.

I got no problems with people saying it isn't that bad, it's no worse than the flu, etc. Everyone's got an opinion and different studies show different things. We're probably years away from concrete answers. I do have problems with those who think they do know the answer and don't treat it like the unknown that it is.

plus, that snippet seems to be more about contact tracing rather than the actual biological infectability of the virus in particular hosts

it says 69% of people (nice) didn't spread the virus to anyone. Maybe those 69% wore masks and stayed home (perhaps because they were feeling sick), limiting contact with other people as much as possible. Their ability to spread the virus was the same as the super-spreaders but the social restrictions is what stopped them from spreading it

that doesn't really talk to capability of their ability to spread the virus, just that they didn't. The reasons as to why they didn't can be complicated

I made the mistake of reading through a thread on Reddit of people who had covid and still have issues. Way too many damn people who have been without their senses of smell or taste for over 6 months now, and others whose resting heart rate is over 100.

I tried hydroxy cut once about a decade ago. The heart rate thing is why I quit. That sounds awful.

Basically if you have a low prevalence and if you're hospitalizations aren't changing, you could literally have almost all your tests be false positives if you r numbers are in this range.
