Allegheny County Update 7/2 - 3,103 Total Cases (+233 Cases, +4 Hospitalizations, +0 Deaths)

Yikes. I think KDKA can use their "shatters" headline now.
They're going to have to put people in that subreddit in straitjackets. I'm afraid to go read it.
Lots of "literallys"

so it must be serious

If the news headline doesn't use the proper adjective, then the increase in cases can be ignored.

While an increase in the number of cases was expected - this is larger than expected. The expectation is that the numbers will also significantly increase again tomorrow. Wearing masks, washing your hands and maintaining physical distance from others is absolutely essential to keep our community safe – now more than ever. Please limit travel and errands to only those that are necessary. Please take the necessary steps to protect those around you. Your vigilance can allow us to keep our businesses open and continue to support the economy.

+4 hospitalizations though. That doesn’t seem high.

I don't think there's any way they will open the bars again if we start pushing to 500 cases which is what the ACHD seems to be hinting at (which I think is the right decision). Restaurants may get some relief if/when the numbers go back down.

I think thats 15 hospitalizations in the last 3 days. Much higher than it had been.

That James19991 guys is always in panic mode. So many of them over there say "we are so screwed" a lot and have been for the past four months. Assuming the 19991 is supposed to be his birth year, he is almost 30 so..yeah.

Any bets we will never see a covid related headline with the words "plummet" or "dive" ?

Yeah hospitalizations are trending up. Not at the levels they were at a few months ago, but definitely higher than they were. I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

That's not really useful right now, because ten days ago we were at 20 cases a day. I don't think those numbers are going to overwhelm local hospitals even in the next 7-10 days when some of these cases wind up with hospitalizations because most of the bar-driven infection is younger demos, but there's going to be a meaningful uptick down the line given they will announce another big increase tomorrow.

Isn’t the hospitalization rate for the younger demographic like a tenth of the older demographic?

I know in Oklahoma the CFR for under 50 is .2% with a hospitalization of less than 5%.

Right -- which is why I don't think that there's a real concern right now that these numbers in two weeks will result in hospital capacity issues. I am saying that seeing 4 hospitalizations today given that 10 days ago we had 20 cases doesn't tell you much about the potential size of the hospitalization increase. I think it will rise materially but remain manageable. The over age 50 higher risk demo still has added about 100 new cases in the last 5 days.

The county dashboard hasn't been updated with today's figures, but for all-time hospitalizations (excluding today), only 20% come from 0-49 year olds. 50-59 is 15%, 60-69 is 26%, 70+ is 39%.

This is why I think it is weird to close things for everyone. Why not targeted age groups have a lot tighter restrictions?

That is assuming those in the younger demographic who are currently going out and getting sick are smart enough not to go to a family picnic and hang out with their parents, grandparents, and other older relatives. Unfortunately, people are stupid.

Maybe the older relatives need to take responsibility themselves too.

I think canceling fireworks was stupid. You are going to have more people than usual blowing off limbs, and setting themselves on fire I bet.

This thing has really made me come to grips with how old im getting. Quarantine has me spending lots of time sitting on the porch and then getting mad at how fast cars are driving down the street. Then last night I was on the verge of yelling out the window as fireworks woke me from a deep, wonderful slumber at 10:15pm

My man. Especially now that I have had children, I get pissed when the yutes drive fast through our neighborhood. Thankfully we live in a cul-de-sac so we don't deal with thru traffic, but I definitely shouted "Slow down!" at someone just last night.
