COVID-19
From a couple weeks ago:The latter could very well be true, though there was an article yesterday from some CEO in India stating that it wouldn't be until 2024 that we'd have worldwide vaccinations complete.Source of the post There are a few things that could account for it: 1) difference in regulations or ability for emergency approval or 2) maybe the 2022 thing is for wide spread distribution.
Africa Celebrates the End of the Wild Poliovirus (but Not the End of All Polio)
A virus that once paralyzed tens of thousands of children a year is said to have been eradicated on the African continent, though a minor strain still infects hundreds.

COVID-19
Our school district is going back to a hybrid/A-B schedule for middle and high schools next week, five day a week instruction for K-5.
This after months of proclamations that they would let science inform the decision. Our local infection rates are the same warning levels they’ve been for weeks, although the overall case numbers are dropping statewide. CDC and state health department have three indicators and we’ve been at High-Medium-High for a month+ now. We were at High-Low-Medium for a two week period over the summer. (I don’t know offhand what the three indicators are and can’t be arsed to look it up right now lol).
The superintendent said the inability of Verizon and AT&T to activate hotspots for rural students and athletes (and band!) feeling bad because neighboring counties are playing football (and marching in band!!!) and they are missing out. He kept throwing in band in there, but it’s obvious athletics are driving part of this decision. The other unseen hand are the handful of large employers who can’t afford to have their employees out taking care of children doing eLearning.
And one of the board members - a guy we used to attend church with, and is married to a pediatrician - brought up the old “we don’t shut down for the flu” argument despite one of his fellow board members was briefly hospitalized with COVID.

But, think of the children!
Right? I mean, it works against all the things I want to do. But it doesn't apply to safety of kids in school?

Our elementary school got their first case and literally sent out an email Sunday night saying we aren't real sure what to do, so those contacted from tracing, please stay home Monday until we figure out what next steps we need to take. How long have you had to figure this out?

One of the few nice things about COVID is that they now stream the board meetings live, so that very question was asked: “what happens if a kid gets sick? What are our plans?” The superintendent said that if the kid was in elementary school, where they have enough space to spread out, and they are wearing masks - only that child would be quarantined (as well as their parents/guardians). Outbreaks will be treated on a case by case basis, meaning there is no threshold before shutting a school or district down.
I can tell you from the few days last week where 50% of the kids were in school to pick up technology, meet teachers, taking pre-tests, etc. - the mask usage was all over the place. Most came in with one on. A few came to school without one (!) But each classroom was handling usage differently. All are supposed to be worn when in the classroom, with exceptions for eating and drinking. My wife observed a teacher going chin guard and not making her kids wear masks properly, and the next classroom hard core mask wearers. Will the school cop to it if a positive case comes out of a classroom like the first one? Or are they going to maintain that everyone is wearing a mask at all times, even when that’s not going to happen?
My university has been 100% masks in all areas except residence halls and private offices (not cubicles) for a month now. It sucks. My Spanish teacher friend has a long day teaching four sections from 9 am until 8 PM with a couple of hours off, and he is struggling...but he has health issues, so he is attempting to set a good example. But checking Spanish pronunciations with masks on...is a challenge.

We just closed on our mortgage re-fi, and had a mobile notary over to execute all the documents. (He never entered the house, we did everything outside on the patio, distanced, masks, etc.)
Aside from the mortgage company having my name wrong on all their docs (Mrs Tif and I do not have the same surname), it reminded me that I was scheduled to sit for the notary public exam on March 14th; got the cancellation notice on the 12th, and they still haven't resumed testing. Just put into context how long this has been going on, and it gave me a sad.

No, it sounds like they've had it at some point. But it's not clear how many currently have it or the severity of those who do.

As much as I hate the whole, get back to normal, this is overblown take. The original goal of this was always alleviate the curve. I think that's been pretty well done in areas, with the assumption that things will open up. Until they didn't.
Right? Like the entire shutdown was to not inundate the hospitals?
