COVID-19

the fearmongering with omicron is frustrating. was delta substantially any worse for children or vaccinated adults than alpha was? omicron is likely the same; gonna **** over unvaccinated adults but won't be much different for anyone not in that group

Yes, Delta was worse than the original strains, pretty sure on both account.
I'm curious what numbers you're seeing and the sources. I posted this last friday
I don’t want to worry about variants until data comes out. I’m done with anecdotal evidence of horror

when delta first started there was all the fearmongering about kids being more susceptible to it. That’s all but disappeared. Yeah kids might be more susceptible but it’d still extremely rare
Researchers looked for signs if delta is causing more severe disease. Both studies found statistically similar levels of severity before and after delta was dominant. For instance, about 23% of those hospitalized were admitted to the intensive care unit in the delta period compared to 27% pre-delta. Likewise, 10% required invasive mechanical veåntilation and 2% died in the delta period compared to 6% and 1%, respectively, before delta.

“Although we are seeing more cases in children and more overall cases, these studies demonstrated that there was not increased disease severity in children,” Dr. Walensky said. “Instead, more children have COVID-19 because there is more disease in the community.”
the hospitalization rates for kids was like 1 in 100,000 weekly. So 2% of that is 0.2 kids out of 100k every week. Of course it’s horrifying but kids are likely more likely to get another super dangerous virus

I mean, your numbers there show that the percentage of children (is that what the stat is for?) who needed to receive medical interventions or died increased during Delta vs the original, even if hospitalization decreased.

I'd say that's arguably "worse", even if it was only a couple percentage points, because we're doing a direct comparison, correct?
it's not technically wrong but I think the question mark with such a small sample size is that we have to concern ourselves with statistical significance. I don't think the CDC thinks mortalities jumping from 1% to 2% is statistically significant in which case we can make the conclusion that delta isn't really any worse than alpha for children

But there's a 4% jump in medical interventions, not just referring to death...

Omicron Risks Infecting Vaccinated People but May Not Cause Them Severe Illness
https://www.wsj.com/articles/omicron-un ... _permalink

There is also another report coming out of Israel saying the same thing. I'm quoting a Reddit user here so take it for what it's worth....
Reporter indicates that: Boosted vaccination protection from infection is 90% Previously sick has twice the chance to get infected then delta variant. R is 1.3 faster than Delta Unvaccinated has 2.4 times the chance of becoming seriously sick then original strain
https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/co ... ction_for/

In other words, this could be a big problem for the unvaccinated. But if you're vaccinated and especially boosted (like most of us are here), Omicron ain't got **** on us.

Unvaccinated helping circulate it (again) may not be the best thing, though. And even being slightly more contagious than delta still kinda sucks, even for vaccinated.

Of course it’s not the best thing. But the good news is that early word is vaccines still offer protection. That was the big worry with this strain. If the booster really gives 90% protection against infection, the only thing we need to worry about is the unvaccinated clogging up hospitals.

I appreciate the good news. Germany will have a vaccine mandate soon, so that's more good news.

Reading deeper into that thread, and they are counting vaccinated but not boosted people in their “unvaccinated” figures. That makes no sense, but also makes this seem much worse now for anyone other than those who have had three shots.

That was tongue in cheek. I understand what you both are saying. Those concerns existed before this new strain and they'll exist long after it. If these reports are correct, this is huge relief. Take the win for now.

Hmm interesting. I believe Israel changed their definition of fully vaccinated to only be those who have had the booster.

I'm not a fan. I recently read some travel diaries by Eugene Chadbourne when he "toured" East Germany in the mid 1980's.

My professor at Juniata spent a lot of time in the GDR during his college days in the mid 80s. The stories he told.

OMICRON spells MORONIC, just saying.

this is probably the same people that I came in contact with back in early October. a woman I (used to) use for embroidery and heat pressing talked my ear off for an hour about how Bill Gates has orchestrated this whole thing so that he can de-populate the earth and part of the conversation was about how the Satanists were behind everything and if I watched movies and TV carefully I'd see symbols such as owls all over it.

I'm actually interested to hear now just how much protection a 2 shot person has now after 6 months of the second shot - based on classifications. Does the MRNA stuff really die that quickly?
