COVID-19

Postby PFiDC » Fri Sep 18, 2020 3:38 pm

For me it is more than an inconvenience. I have COPD and the mask makes it harder to breathe when I am at the gym exercising or even just bowling in my old guys league. I still wear a mask in all businesses and anywhere it is required to help protect other people. It is much easier to breathe when I get to take it off. Pretty sure I don't want to wear one every fall winter. I will rely on the flu shot.
I also can't recognize people with masks and can't tell when someone is smiling or frowning.
I get that you have a pre existing condition but remember that masks don't protect you. They protect other people as you've said you do.

When Grunts showed me that something like 20% of all flu cases are asymptomatic it was enough to convince me that this should just be part of how we treat each other.

20-75% I believe is the actual range.

I think the CDC estimates 80% of flu deaths are from people that don’t get vaccinated.

But what if it's another strain? Flu vaccines aren't that accurate from what I understand. Sure, they do enough good to make it worth it (I get one every year), but wearing a mask is literally the least you could do in top of it.

My ex used to work on a flu study and she told me that flu shots are based on what is moving around the globe and the strain that is most likely to hit the US hardest that year. Unfortunately it doesn't always happen that way.

I think everyone agrees flu shot + mask would be great. We can't get enough to do step one, let alone worry about step two.

It can still protect you from having severe symptoms.

Probably a good idea but do you really think the majority of people in the south are going to wear a mask from October till March? People have lived with the flu forever without masks and I doubt if that will change once a safe effective COVID vaccine is found.

One of my neighbors just spent the last 45 minutes telling me that:
  • deaths are overblown (“only hundreds died from covid, the rest are natural causes... look it up”)
  • hydroxychloriquine is the best way to treat it and it has no adverse affects on the heart because it’s not listed on the box
  • Wolf and other governors locked states down to punish trump
  • we’ll get a vaccine on November 4th
Jesus **** Christ, these people exist.

It boggles my mind that people refuse the flu shot. Insurance companies should require it to have their coverage

For some it's a combo of "don't tell me what to do" and "masks don't work". For others, it's a selfishness thing. They understand it works, but the inconvenience (if we even want to call it that) isn't worth it.
Oh, it’s absolutely a selfishness thing for me

I wouldn’t even say I’m inconvenienced. It’s depressing seeing people with masks. Not willing to hug, kiss, handshake, high five, etc

I remember on here someone posted a video of a woman who was angry because of a similar sentiment but she deserved to be ridiculed because COVID is very different than the flu. With the flu, I think it becomes a more complicated equation in weighing the costs and benefits

If we’re saying we can’t have bars, fans at sporting events, parties etc in the winter anymore (effectively all things that violate social distancing) then I don’t think that’s worth it at all for the flu unfortunately.

The contract a lot of people are signing right now is with the pretense that this is all over as soon as we find a vaccine and get it to people. If you tell people “this is going to happen for 90 days a year every year” or however long flu season is, you’re going to have a lot more upset people

oh and winters are already depressing enough. Doing this every winter will substantially affect mental health imo

Oh it's absolutely not going to happen. Doesn't mean it shouldn't.

If I was sick and had to go out during flu season to pick up a necessity like medicine or something, I'd put on a mask, but other than that, not going to happen.
