COVID-19

Postby nocera » Fri Sep 18, 2020 9:53 am

Source of the post Guess I'll have to go to CVS or somewhere to get it. I've read that it's recommended to wait until October to get the shot, so I plan on getting it then.
Yeah, I got mine a little early (few weeks ago). I get it at my local grocery store, as they give you a $10 coupon if you do. Might be worth seeing if Giant Eagle does something similar.
They do.

You don’t think that mid-September is a bit early?

I get mine the week before thanksgiving

Isn't it the same shot, regardless of when you get it?

Yea, same shot, but I believe the antibodies your body makes after receiving the shot only last for so long, so if you wait you'll be covered for more of the worst part of flu season.

You can get it again.

I hadn’t thought about it at the time. Nothing I can do now. I’ve been doing a good job with social distancing and going out, and I usually get the shot in September, so I think I’ll be alright.

It lasts approximately 6 months. The recommendation to wait until October was to get through March, as there have been some bad late flu issues in March recently. If more people are wearing masks and washing their hands, I’d like to think that this year will actually be better.

On that note:
Interseasonal (i.e., summer) circulation of influenza in the United States (May 17–August 8, 2020) is currently at historical lows (median = 0.20% tests positive in 2020 versus 2.35% in 2019, 1.04% in 2018, and 2.36% in 2017). Influenza data reported to the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) FluNet platform from three Southern Hemisphere countries that serve as robust sentinel sites for influenza from Oceania (Australia), South America (Chile), and Southern Africa (South Africa) showed very low influenza activity during June–August 2020, the months that constitute the typical Southern Hemisphere influenza season. In countries or jurisdictions where extensive community mitigation measures are maintained (e.g., face masks, social distancing, school closures, and teleworking), those locations might have little influenza circulation during the upcoming 2020–21 Northern Hemisphere influenza season.

So looks to me like masks, social distancing and crowd restrictions should be a normal fall winter happening. Probably (hopefully) will not happen. I am extremely tired of it.

My University had 120 cases in last 10 days. School districts are pissed because they've been doing a really good job so far, but now town is getting bad and everything looking to go online again

It would be sorely morose if that happened

Not that I was chatting up girls all the time but now I feel unconscionably awkward starting convos with girls/strangers in general now (masks, don’t want to get to close and violate social distancing, etc)

If this become commonplace, **** would become very depressing

Well, it took 16 days for my district to get its first positive case.

Intensive care units in hospitals in some parts of France are now nearing capacity, Van Kerkhove said Friday on CNN, adding that hospitalizations are doubling roughly every eight days in the United Kingdom.

“We haven’t even started to hit the flu season yet so we’re worried that these increasing numbers of hospitalization and ICU are really going to overburden an already burdened system,” she said on CNN.
Humble_Analysis might be jumping the gun on this one.

We have two cases on campus - one student, one staff member. But 35 students in quarantine...because of activities off campus. Mostly, local students went home or to other larger SC universities and partied. Good times.

the true upcoming test will be Thanksgiving and Christmas as people say "f*ck it!" and travel to their out-of-state relatives anyway.

I still can't fathom the thought process that wearing a mask, even without Covid but during cold/flu season, is such a horrible thing.

At the beginning of September the UK was having like 20 admissions to the hospital a day. So that so far is just being misleading.

Theyre inconvenient and uncomfortable. It's really that simple. People would rather be less inconvenienced and more comfortable.

For some it's a combo of "don't tell me what to do" and "masks don't work". For others, it's a selfishness thing. They understand it works, but the inconvenience (if we even want to call it that) isn't worth it.

For me it is more than an inconvenience. I have COPD and the mask makes it harder to breathe when I am at the gym exercising or even just bowling in my old guys league. I still wear a mask in all businesses and anywhere it is required to help protect other people. It is much easier to breathe when I get to take it off. Pretty sure I don't want to wear one every fall winter. I will rely on the flu shot.
I also can't recognize people with masks and can't tell when someone is smiling or frowning.

The group you left out are the perpetual complainers. These people will b*tch and moan about it and act tough but still follow the rules. I believe this may be the largest group.
