Hope he's not another Swaggerty. Highly ranked college bat out of a smaller NCAA baseball program that fell a few slots (ranked 5 by MLB and 6 by fangraphs) to the Pirates.

My only real concern with Gonzales is that he should have a quick ascent to the majors. Eviscerating the GMNH strategy of turning everyone into a career minor leaguer before getting promoted would make quite happy.

it does sound like he's close but the team isn't so why not go for a higher ceiling?

Maybe they just wanted a "sure thing " so they could point to the success of the new regime in a few years.

I think you guys are reading too much into a pick. Just take the best player available in a baseball draft. It looks like that's what they did

This. I've seen Gonzales described as high-ceiling, low floor with power than won't transfer OR the next Keston Hiura. Dude hit 351/451/630/1081 with 7 HRs in the Cape Cod League so that's something at least.

My boss is friends with our old buddy Fat Jimmy Anderson. Hope my boss forgives me for putting a hole in the wall- it's an involuntary reaction when I hear his name.

I dont miss baseball at all. This coming from a pretty big fan of the game. I haven't been a fan of the direction it has headed the past few years, and hated some of the new rules that were set to be put in place.

Even if they play 50 or 60, this shutdown is an absolute killer for an already quickly declining league (outside of the 8 markets that matter). They're going to feel this for a long time.

Had Starkey and Poni or Joe or whoever on yesterday and they were going on about how latest owner offer is insulting blah blah blah..... maybe it’s an absolute hosing and maybe it isn’t but if anyone making mega bank off this dying game thinks it’s a good idea to eff around and miss an opportunity to fill the current sports void I can’t help them.

This was already set up as a lost year for the pirates, so in that sense, no baseball has been nbd for me. It would have just been a year of looking at milb box scores.

That might be a big reason why I don't care. I wasn't excited about it to begin with
