Hayes extension wouldnt be desperation. Kind of a smart risk for this type of franchise to take. Bet on a guy early and save money later.
Hayes pros - money now, opening day roster spot
Hayes cons - possibly less in years 2/3 of arbitration
Pirates pros - long term savings, cost certainty
Pirates cons - paying money for a guy with 0 MLB PAs, more money spent over the first 3-4 years
Fans pros - less Colleen Moron

The only one in that group who makes no sense for an extension is Newman. You make that offer to Hayes to try and avoid any service time issues, and out of all their prospects, he has by far the highest floor, so really, that risk is minimal on the Pirates' side.
Musgrove is solid, not an ace, but easily a long term piece in the rotation, and getting him beyond 2022 is a no-brainer. I would not be making an offer to extend Reynolds right now, but I don't think there's a ton of risk in him being a bust.

Hayes is a 279/354/399/752 hitter in his minor league career with one season (AA) of looking like someone who can hit at a level commensurate with his position is crazy.

Agreed. Newman and Reynolds had bananas debuts. Let them suck a bit this year then extend them lol but im serious. Hayes is a cant miss contributor though I'd rather wait on him too. i admit i don't care about the major league team right now and won't watch much and so i scoff completely at the bring up the young guys crowd. This is the year to let out of option talent and reclamations with upside bomb to find some value to trade. If they were contenders this year I'd say get Hayes up now because i think by the end of the year he'd be an upgrade over moran. But even if he's an upgrade now I'd rather him take his time and let us reap his peak yearsThe only one in that group who makes no sense for an extension is Newman. Since I assume no one is paying attention. Seems like Holland will win a spot in the rotation come opening day. Tucker spent the offseason training with Bellinger and has been hitting well in ST, Polanco looks healthy and is raking, but as we've learned, he's bound to hurt himself and then lose his swing or timing.
Archer seems to be better, but who knows, and Keller looks like he'll easily break camp with the rotation, especially with Brault getting hurt. BP is still a disaster, but Burdi is back and seems to have cleaned up his delivery some to prevent his arm from falling off. They have some dude named Cederlind that thrown the ball very hard and could be a decent BP prospect for 2020, Santana looks good in his return, so that's good. Not sure what they're going to do with Kuhl, hopefully start him on the DL so he can pitch in the minors to rehab. So coming out of camp this month, BP likely to be: Kela, RichRod, Crick, Burdi, Feliz, Santana and I assume one more guy. Rotation then: Archer, Musgrove, WIlliams, Keller, Holland.

They're 3-14 in spring training. I would imagine that's just going to carry on through to the regular season.

It worked for a while, and then it didn't. The long term ramifications being of course, the amount of trade value they destroyed from Glasnow and Cole

I think those quotes from him further hammer home the problem with their philosophy of trying to make everyone pitch the same way. What’s the point of making Morton focus on doing something he’s obviously not comfortable with? Work with each pitcher, their skills, and the pitch mix they’re comfortable with to make them the best pitcher possible. Trying to turn a two-seam swing and miss guy into a four-seam pound the inside guy is just dumb. If you want four-seam pound the inside guys, find one and make them a better version of themselves.

For what it's worth, it seems(ed?) like the current regime's coaches were working with pitchers on an individual basis, basing on the needs/abilities of each pitcher.

The comments from Yankee fans...wow. Didn't think I could hate that franchise any more.

I think the 2019 pirates are a pretty good comparison to that simulation. They weren’t a last place team on paper (at least when the season started) but the margin of error was nonexistent. Sprinkle in some injuries (Taillon) underperformance (bullpen, Jung Ho) and demoralizing events (players punching coaches, players getting arrested for felonies) you have yourself a full fledged debacle.

ATTSN is airing the blackout game. Not sure I'll ever go to another game that can top that

It's the only time a baseball game has made me weep because of excitement. It was intense.

Yeah, that was cool.
The Pirates peaked that day, and Cueto has a WS ring. Cool story, tho.

Still the greatest pittsburgh sporting event in my lifetime. And i went to game 7 in detroit and game 6 in nashville. And game 7 of the ecf vs ottawa.

That's nonsense. It was a **** wild card game. I'll take championship winning events over the high point of another failed Pirates season.

I was 3 when the Pirates last had a winning season. We had season tickets growing up and I've played baseball all my life so baseball was big for me. That seemed like a championship to me. Whatever

Well it also obviously was an extremely successful season, but clearly the past 5 years have clouded people's memory.
