https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PIT/2005.shtml

I remember being excited at the end of the 2005 season. Bay was a stud, through that season, it looks like they promoted Duffy, McClouth, Doumit, and Eldred for the lineup. And Duke, Maholm, Snell and Gorzelanny in the rotation. They also had Perez, Freddie Sanchez a roided Jack Wilson and Mike Gonzalez in the BP.

Then that offseason they brought in Joe Randa, Sean Casey and Burnitz. Then sucked again, but will older players.

Pirates also drafted Cutch in 2005, which resulted in legit excitement.

Alright so another pirates win and rangers loss puts the pirates 1 game back.

Final weekend matchups:

Pirates @ Indians, Astros @ Rangers
Keller vs Carrasco, Urqidy vs Cody
Musgrove vs Civale, McCullers vs Gibson (?)
Brubaker vs McKenzie, Valdez vs Lyles (!)

Was hoping for a Beiber start in there.

Indians clinched, Astros magic number appears to be 1. Not looking good. The Cubs played their scrubs (hey, the Pirates are at least better than scrubs!) which is why the Pirates had any chance.

Look for Indians scrubs and Astros regulars until they clinch.

Pirates starter Mitch Keller ended his season with a hitless streak that evoked statistical comparisons ranging from Johnny Vander Meer to Jason Schmidt.

After throwing six hitless innings against the Cardinals last Saturday, Keller didn’t allow a hit against the Indians over five innings on Friday night at Progressive Field. According to STATS LLC, Keller became the first National League pitcher to complete back-to-back no-hit outings of at least five innings each since Vander Meer’s consecutive no-hitters on June 11-15, 1938.

But Keller was uncharacteristically wild against Cleveland. He walked only two batters while throwing 84 pitches in his start against St. Louis, but he issued eight free passes and needed 98 pitches to finish the fifth on Friday. The 24-year-old right-hander’s eight walks were the most by a Pirates pitcher since Schmidt also walked eight against the Reds on Sept. 18, 1996.

Rangers won in 10. Not sure how tiebreakers work, but the pirates can at best tie the Rangers.

According to reddit the tiebreaker is whoever had the worst record last season. It’s Kumar time!
