Seems a bit of an overreaction. Freddy that is, not canceling the season.

I'm not sure why. The institutional losses, financial and otherwise, are going to have long term effects.

I see that players are basically begging to play.

Now they are. Just last week the pac 12 players were going to opt out if they didn't get 50% of revenue or have to sign waivers. Big 10 players did something similar.

You also can forget about an extra year of eligibility. That's insane to contemplate for recruiting classes and coaches.

If they cancel the season none of this will ever be the same again. It is what it is.
They'll all get their year back. They just did it for all spring sports

I mean... if you didn't see what was happening around the country and see the writing on the wall for this one, I don't know what to tell you.

There's 1% of the kids that will move on to play pro, and for them it may hurt, but at the same time, they're all in this together. I understand they want to play. I get it. But this is a once in a century event (seemingly). Everyone is hurting.

It's more a logistical thing than just an extra year. You can't carry an extra 15-20 kids like that.

I suppose we'll see. There will be a number of seniors that won't come back too, I'd presume

I like how they are United, but leave out half of Division I football conferences. If you aren't P5 you aint **** I guess!

it's a matter of time before they break off anyway

perhaps if they'd just be transparent about the money behind this all and get rid of the amateur charade we could get a season

Oh I know. I would have thought the actual players would be united with them. I know the admin/conference leaders aren't.

I was under the impression most non-P5 conferences cancelled sports. Is that incorrect?

Only the MAC has officially.

A lot of FCS conferences have (formerly D1-AA and below).

I was under the impression another conference had cancelled but I might be thinking of Ivy League.

I know individual schools were weighing their options to so I could be mixing those things as well (I think UConn cancelled fall sports or was in the process of it).

UConn only cancelled football. They say it's to protect the students, but this was the first year they were independent and their schedule went to crap after conferences were going inhouse only.

They still plan on playing their other sports in the Big East as of right now.

I'm strangely ok with the idea of no college football this fall because of this mess. A lot of what makes the game great is the atmospheres of the different venues and that feel of a big game. With greatly reduced or no fans in the stands, the games just won't have the same oomph that they always do. I wondered how I'd feel about baseball, hockey, and NBA with no fans when they returned and I've been good with it (though, hockey is still a little weird with no reaction on goals). Normally by this time of the year, I'm poring over preview articles and getting worked up for that first Penn State game of the year. When the schedule came out last week, I gave that Penn State-Northwestern opener a cursory 'meh'. I also have an ethical problem with colleges telling students that they're ok to take online classes but requiring athletes to be on campus.

All that being said, I know that no college football this season is going to spell the end to a number of sports as well as whole athletic programs across the board and that sucks. But maybe something like that has to happen in order for the economic model to get overhauled. It's become pretty ridiculous that some schools rake in the dollars while the vast percentage of the landscape barely scrapes by. We've become gluttonous when it comes to college athletics.

For those who are of the thinking that 'we need to continue to live our lives' and 'we can't live in so much fear', I just simply say that there are more important things in life than college football and sports in general. Another something I never thought I'd ever say.
