I can't remember if we stayed around that area or not. I can say that you will need to drive to most places, which kind of sucks. There isn't any particular "bad" place to stay, but if you want to be able to walk around, maybe look at the area and make sure there are options within walking distance. I would probably steer further away from the boardwalk as that obviously tends to be more busy. I'll see if I can find the details on where we stayed the past two times. I enjoyed that place.

The kangaroo used to through the yinzer ritual of OCMD every year growing up. Generally speaking, the closer you get to the southern tip, the busier and rowdier it will be. I went down for the first time as an adult a few years ago and stayed around the SR 90 bridge and preferred that to closer to the boardwalk. 45th IMO is probably not my cup of tea

Yeah, so we stayed at English Towers, which is a condominium high rise around 100th St. It was a quieter area, and only those staying at the condo were allowed on the beach. Plus, each condo had a locker at ground level so you could store all your beach gear, which was nice. The first year we stayed, the condo wasn't great. Needed some updating. The second year, it was a much nicer condo. Just depends on the owners, I guess.

Hmm. Most of those sound doable, but I'll still probably avoid crowds. Appreciate it, nocera! :thumb:
No problem. I can't understate how different it is from HH and OBX. I mention that because a lot of my family didn't like it due to how commercialized it is. I liked it exactly for that reason.
What do you think of the area around 45th street? That's where I'm currently looking.
We used to stay at Harbourtowne condos (only three stories) on 24th and the bay. Close walk to a dock bar, FishTales at Bahia Marina (22nd). You can watch charters come back in usually with huge tuna around sundown.

The “drunk bus” runs up and down the main drag for a couple bucks for an all day pass. Go to Seacrets at least once. Daytime is different than night time there.

There are party fishing boats that you can go out on. And you can drive to Assateague Island.

And if you go in the fall, Buxy’s Salty Dog Saloon on 27th is the local Pittsburgh bar. Saw Big Ben’s first game there.

I booked for the week after July 4th earlier this afternoon, but this is all good info - thank you!

Oh man... The drunk bus. Definitely got familiar with that during Senior Week in 2001.

Hell, who knows at this point, but you may be able to watch Pens playoffs at Buxy’s that week.

I'm thinking about going to Ocracoke for a few days. Not really overcrowded and plenty to do. Plus accessible only by ferry, which the kids like.

I've tossed that around a couple times. But the thought of having to drive another 3 hours AFTER crossing into Kitty Hawk is just not appealing  Or the inverse coming back

That said, it is admirable how the residents have bounced back from Dorian last fall.

Yeah, they are used to bouncing back from tropical storms. It's in their DNA.

I'm a little over a month away from driving to Colorado, Wyoming and south Dakota for vacation. I think we are switching to camping outside rather than hotels for the way out and back. Most of our trip will be staying with a family and camping. It certainly seems likely to happen, but I'll be damned if we aren't being cautious about the whole thing. I feel like driving and camping puts us in a better spot with everything happening, but I still don't know about this. Any thoughts on camping vs hotel. Any suggestions? Still feels like a wait and see thing with a month left to go

I drove to Texas and back last weekend. The farther west and south you go the less adherence to COVID precautions you'll see. It was like a gradient, by the time I got to Oklahoma I was the only one wearing a mask.

I stayed in a hotel in STL on the way out. That wasn't so bad, but it was a Hyatt Place, so a national chain that can afford to go into overkill with their precautions. On the way back I slept in my van between two semi's at a rest area.

I think my best observation to share is that ultimately you decide your level of interaction and subsequent risk. Be your own best protector and you'll be okay.

a coworker just got back from a road trip to California. he was helping a buddy move his son from LA to Dallas. in nowhere SoCal the buddy needed a restroom and pulling over to go in the bushes was not an option for what he needed. they tried the gas stations but none of them had open public restrooms. end of story is, the guy had to throw his pants away. :scared:

While I did make reservations for Ocean City, MD in July, they have a 72 hour cancellation policy. Gonna wait until the week before to decide whether or not it's an acceptable risk to make the trip.
