Source of the post Some of those people who were hurt and stuck in hospitals obviously missed the boat and they didnt have passports. I
Wait this doesn't sound right. You didn't have to show your passport at each port?
We needed a passport to board and exit the ship in Florida, but used our ship's magstripe keycard to get on and off the ship in the various ports - in 2003 and 2013.

Our passports were locked in our stateroom's safe while we onshore.

Aren't you sort of required to have your passport on your person when abroad? That was always sort of my presumption.

Nope, Royal Caribbean - in 2013 at least - said it wasn't necessary and told us to keep it on the ship.

when I travel internationally I (obviously) take my passport with me but when I'm out and about in the city I'm visiting I simply keep a copy of my passport on my person and leave the original locked up somewhere safe.

I wondered about that. Will the travel agency/tour group help out with that?

Nope. They are listed as our 'sponsor', and that's about it. They have an online application process, but you have to go to the consulate in person to pay. I'm lucky I live in a city that even has a consulate. I can't imagine if someone living in Bumblefuk, MO wanted to go to Vietnam what they'd have to do.

It also doesn't help that the .vn consular website appears to have been translated by a platypus.

heading to Vegas for a long weekend. Gonna get in late enough that I'm gonna miss the Golden Knights game by about an hour.

I have lots of time to burn tomorrow, but can't really do much on Sunday since it's race day. Flight doesn't leave until late Monday, but I'm not sure what kind of condition I'll be in after running this half marathon.

Anything close to the Strip that is worth checking out?

I figured there would be a consulate in Atlanta, but nope, D.C. is closer.

I just got off my 15th cruise. They have always told us to take the ship keycard and photo id out into the ports. I'm too paranoid for that. we take our passports as well. I have a fear that for some reason or another I'll get stuck on the island and the boat leaves without me on it. I want my passport in that case.

Nearly all the restaurants are great. Mandalay Bay has an aquarium. There's a roller-coaster at Stratosphere that's like 800 feet above the Strip. Most of the shows are good (Cirque is great). Where are you staying?

So I'm in Vegas for the weekend. The entire strip smells like the chron.

Not sure if it's because of the legalization, the convention that's in town, or both.

So, what's the deal with international travel when your drivers license has an old address? When we bought our new house, I went to the DMV to change my address, and they just gave me a supplemental card to carry in my wallet with my new addy handwritten in and stamped by the DMV. Will that be any sort of issue for ID purposes when traveling internationally? Not that some Customs schmoe would even know that. But we almost got locked out of Spain because Mrs Tif's passport was set to expire in like 87 days and the EU has a 90-day validity requirement. So I just want to make sure I'm covering all my bases.

Unless you plan on driving in Viet-f'in-nam, why bring said DL? You should only need your passport to get by.

I'm going to be in DC all next week for a conference. I'll be staying by the convention center. Any food recommendations or other general tips would be appreciated.

It's been mentioned in this thread before, but the Old Ebbitt Grill is always a good choice.

:thumb: Thanks. I'm sure DC is brought up constantly in this thread but it's difficult to search since you need at least three characters.

On 7th street a couple blocks south of the DCCC, Jaleo (Spanish) and Oyamel (Mexican) are both excellent. Graffiato is a block over; it's highly-rated, but our own meal there was so-so. That's also where DC's Chinatown is located, so there will be good eats aplenty if you just walk into some random place. International Spy Museum on F and 9thNW. Ford's Theater/Petersen House. I think you need more lead time to make arrangements, but the FBI Hoover Building tour is neat.

That's also the neighborhood with the Caps' arena, so maybe a hockey game?
