More like I learned that the highs aren’t as high as I was led to believe. Which may work out for everything except snorkeling and diving.

I did a semester in Brisbane from July to November back in my day. The further North, the warmer. If you want to snorkel/dive and really enjoy the beach, stay toward Cairns. It'll still be hot. Brisbane/Gold Coast will still be nice compared to here and you could still hit the beach but you'll be like the northerners at the beaches in Florida in December when it's 70 and no one else is there. Melbourne was a really cool town. I'd recommend checking out the Whitsunday Islands. We did a little trip there. We were cheap and stayed in a hostel on Airlie Beach but you're a grown up and can stay on a nice place on the isles (I think Hamilton Island is the nice one). Let me know if you're looking into somewhere and need to know anything

So for as long as I can remember, OBX was always the big family vacation. We didn't necessarily go EVERY year, but we went most years.
This time around we went to Murrels Inlet, SC with just the immediate family. I'll preface this with the fact that there will always be nostalgia towards OBX because of all the memories and such, but I enjoyed pretty much everything about this trip better.
The actual drive was better, despite being longer... mostly because it avoids all the large cities in Virginia, the parkway, and the PA turnpike, any of which can ruin your day right quick.
The beach is about 800x better. No massive dune to crawl over, no massive piles of broken shells with every wave, etc.
Plenty of awesome places to eat... basically every one was a home run. Since it was just 4 of us, we went out for at least one meal every day, whereas we would normally have a larger group and thus do a lot more cooking in house. We did have a couple excellent meals at home though as well.
We drove up to Myrtle to New South Brewing on Tuesday and had a couple excellent brews in a cool space.
The only real complaint is that I didn't manage to find a really good bottle shop in the area, so while I did get to try some decent local stuff, I definitely found myself missing Chip's. I will have to do more research if we end up going back next year.
It originally looked like the weather was going to suck for half the week, but the storms largely ended up missing us, and save for one night early in the week, we had almost no rain whatsoever... it was awesome.
We thought some of our place in OBX were "beach front", but this was a whole different level. We literally just had to walk down a couple steps from our deck and we were there. Much time was spent sitting on said deck with adult beverages.
Definitely one of the best vacations I've ever had.

You had almost perfect weather this week. I love the desolation of OBX, but I do like restaurants and stuff to do. I maintain the northern and southern parts of the Myrtle Beach area are great. The center section is awful, for a variety of reasons.
Remind me before you go next time. I've got a few restaurant recommendations for you. (And we may be living there next year)

After all of the stories about airlines struggling, etc., I'm sitting here watching my tracked flights climb from $2761 to $3536 over the course of two months. **** AA right in the ass.

Enjoyed a long weekend in Asheville this past weekend. I guess it's being quantified as like the Portland of North Carolina, or like, Lawrenceville if it were larger. But of course, with mountains and stuff. That all checked out, it was very fun with plenty a restaurant/brewery/coffee shop/boutique to check out. One nice thing is the food/drink prices haven't yet caught up to even the bougier places in Pittsburgh, so it was cheaper in that regard, which was a pleasant surprise.

Got back from Boston last Friday after a three day trip for work. Mask policy everywhere and several of my favorite nearby bars were closed permanently during the pandemic.
Boo.

Work is sending me to SF the week after Thanksgiving. Problem is I'm going with a complete workaholic, so it'll take any fun out of the trip.

What's a good late April/early May roadtrip from Pittsburgh? Willing to go up to about 1k miles away.

Maine is definitely top of the list. Presume the weather is a bit cold but not tons of snow at that point of the year?

I don't know for sure, but I would assume not. It would also be one of the best times of the year to avoid mosquitos.

Mosquitoes tend to emerge in the rainy spring up there. The earlier it starts to get warmer, the worse they will be. You're right though, they do get a lot worse after June.I don't know for sure, but I would assume not. It would also be one of the best times of the year to avoid mosquitos.
A buddy of mine from high school lives in Fort Kent, ME. Take a look at that place on Google Maps. It is an interesting town, about as remote as it gets on the Canadian border.

I forget what agency (Forestry, probably, hah) but I applied for a job up in that area. Either Fort Kent or Fort Fairfield. It was almost a three-hour drive to Bangor. Yeah, naw.
