Did you check out the Underground yet? Last time I was there I got to meet a couple of Negro League players, one of whom was James "Red" Moore (who passed away at the age of 99 in 2016...I met him in 2005). They were selling signed cards for 10 or 15 bucks, figured it was the least I could do to buy one. Anyway, it's kinda cool down there.

Stone Mountain is fun too, if you can appreciate it for what it was and not get triggered ;)
Have not been to the Underground yet. Sounds interesting, but not sure how sketchy I want to get since I'll have my daughter with me. I've heard Stone Mountain is fun, but pretty much stuck in downtown area as the volleyball is at the convention center and my car will be stuck in a garage for weekend.

Thanks for restaurant suggestions blackjack and dodint.

There's also Legoland Discovery Atlanta: https://atlanta.legolanddiscoverycenter.com/

Although your daughter might be too old for that.

The only reason to visit Atlanta is to go to the Georgia Aquarium, which is world-class.

They have whale sharks. Which is nuts.

They were the main reason I wanted to go. The other exhibits are also outstanding.

Making yearly trek to Atlanta for volleyball. Have done the aquarium (pretty good), World of Coke (bad), CNN Center (#fakenews), and walked around Olympic Park in past years. Any rec's for things to do or restaurants to go to in downtown area?
no, no, NO! do not go to Underground Atlanta under ANY circumstances, especially at night. there are a few new things to do in the downtown area.
National Center For Civil and Human Rights https://www.civilandhumanrights.org/
College Football Hall of Fame https://www.cfbhall.com
I haven't been to either yet but I hear very good things about both.
you also might see if there's an event you can go to at Mercedes Benz Stadium. though IMO Atlanta didn't need a retractable roof stadium it really is an impressive facility and the MLS ATL United games there are great.
Stone Mountain is great for outdoor activities. there's a small parking fee but hiking up the mountain is a great workout.
if you're into rollercoasters we have Six Flags Over Georgia just West of the city.
if you like a good burger The Vortex in either Midtown or Little Five Points (LFP would be my preference. fun and funky neighborhood) is a must stop: https://thevortexatl.com/

OK, after reading these posts, I went back and looked at the Underground again. I was there 13 years ago, and it has apparently changed a lot since even then.

Edit: This picture on Wiki was from 2008. So yes, judging by the recent TripAdvisor posts it HAS changed quite a bit

yep, nowadays it looks like this:

until they can "clean up" the area around it, UA will continue to be a dump. nobody who actually lives in metro ATL goes there for anything that's legal.

one other food suggestion not far from downtown is Krog St Market: http://www.krogstreetmarket.com/

I ended up not doing any of the suggestions, only due to scheduling of volleyball. We did go to Ponce City Market, which was pretty cool. A lot of different restaurants, food shops, and other things. Had Hops fried chicken, which was really good.

jeez! I completely forgot about Ponce City Market! lots of great food options there. I've only been a few times but it's always very nostalgic for me. when I was a kid that building was a Sears & Roebuck and we'd go shopping there sometimes on Sundays after church.
did you go up to the roof? I haven't done that yet but I've heard it's a great view with lots of fun things to do.

No, didn't go to the roof. Not sure if that was open, as didn't even know it was an option. We just got food and went up to the second floor.

Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City announced it's opening for June 28th. They listed a slate of entertainment that is so-so, but promised over 300 shows in the next year.

When I was in high school, I had a dream of getting a Hard Rock t-shirt from every location. At the time, I thought there were only like nine locations.

That's...........a bold move. AC has been on a steep downward trajectory for years. For crying out loud, Revel Casino was a $2.4 million casino and closed in two years (!).

Atlantic City is one of the most depressing places I've ever been. You get one block away from the Boardwalk, and it's just urban squalor.

When I was there for my bachelor party, one of us dropped a beer can that we were taking to one of the BYOB strip joints there. I lean down to pick it up, and suddenly a hand reaches down and grabs it. Some hobo, with one arm that was cut off at the elbow, proceeds to somehow pop the tab with his stump and drinks the whole thing right there. So that was something.

Let's be honest you wouldn't remember if you just picked it up and drank it - this is much cooler

BILLION with a B.

But, AC casinos have actually done much better since the closing of 4 (5?) of them.

I watched the CEO's address this morning and they said they are playing up the entertainment angle more than the gambling.

We'll see what other shows they add.

I can't think of a single show that would make me want to travel to Atlantic City to see.

Whoops, mistype there. That's an interesting approach, actually, and I wasn't aware that the other casinos had improved. Guess that makes sense, it was way oversaturated there.

Every time I see a picture of Atlantic City - it always appears as if time just stopped int he 80s/90s and they never updated. Like a relic of the past.
