6 hours until we hit the Outer Banks...getting a hotel tonight through Sunday and then checking into our beachfront house for the week. Need this vacation soooooo bad. Giddy up!

My wife and I are seriously considering getting a house for the last week in October in the OBX. Maybe down towards Hatteras.

Obviously it will be cooler and not swimming weather, but we love being down here. We could get a nice beachfront place for the week under a grand. Plus, this will probably be the only year we can do something like that since our daughter will still be remote learning. We would maybe take a day or two of during the week but work the rest of it from the beach house.

I've also been wanting to take our goldendoodle to the beach since we've had her. She turns 9 this fall and is still like a puppy, so this would be the perfect opportunity. Just us, no family or friends.

My wife seems to be insistent that we need to go for more than a week and go from place to place to place. I honestly have no idea. I've been trying to do some research to see the best bet.

Open to other ideas as well. Italy, France etc.

Shaf, when we lived in NC we would often go to Hatteras in the deep offseason, like for my wife's birthday in February. It was very enjoyable having the shore to ourselves. But it is almost like camping, bring everything you might need with you. Most places are closed, and NOTHING is open past 6pm.

Thanks man. Was hoping you would chime in because I had a feeling you had experience with it. Yeah I'm definitely excited for the Shining vibe... Just a nice quiet trip away. And if there's a year to do it, it's now.

The only vacation where we've done any significant moving around was our trip to SG/Vietnam. We don't normally like to go places and pack and unpack several times. We did a farmhouse/agriturismo in Toscana for 11 days, then 4 food-poisoned days in Firenze; then it was a similar split between Barcelona and San Sebastián. But in southeast Asia, it way 4 days in SG, then 3 days in Hanoi, then an overnight cruise in Ha Long Bay, then 3 days in Hue, and then 3 days in Hoi An...... that's just way too much gettin' around; that trip involved four regional flights, in addition to the trans-Pac outbound and homebound flights. I think all totted up, between the flights and the car rides, we spent something like 17 hours just traversing, which is how long the flight from SFO to SIN was.

Our next international sojourn will likely be Japan, which will involve a certain amount of gettin' around. We'll base out of either Tokyo or Osaka (where Mrs Tif lived for 3 years), but both cities are already on the itinerary, as is Kyoto.

After that, we've been talking about southwestern Spain and Portugal a lot recently. And then there's the twice-deferred trip to England and Ireland. And there's always the trip to Australia that I've wanted to take since I was 3 or 4 years old and could say 'shark'. And Montreal for Grand Prix week has been something I've wanted to do for nearly as long. Beyond those destinations, I'd like to sort of put the international trips on Shuffle and just start repeating.

Get trip insurance as well, because we’ve had at least a couple of tropical storms in late September/Early to mid October the last few years.

It will also be bluefish season, which is pretty cool to watch people pull those in. And you can drive on the beach in the offseason, provided you have a 4WD.

you could also just decide to cut Southern Italy. Florence is a must. Venice was meh though.

Yes, and I would definitely recommend going there. I went with my wife for about a week back when PSU played USF in Dublin and although a full day was spent around the game, we didn't get to see the entire country. You could spend 2-3 days in Dublin alone. We also traveled to the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, Adare Manor (stayed there 2 nights) Killarney (stayed there 1 night), Powerscourt House in Wicklow (stayed there one night), Kilkenny, and Rock of Cashel. That doesn't even include Belfast and the Giant's Causeway. The only thing that you might want to skip was the Blarney Castle, but the grounds were nice and there were other things to see there than the stone.

Between Ireland and Italy, I'd recommend Italy. Florence, Venice, and Rome are a must. We also stayed at Positano, but anywhere on the Amalfi coast will work.
