We leave Mexico City for Barcelona tomorrow evening. DDJ decided this morning would be the perfect opportunity to puke for the first time in his non-infant life. Based on what transpired after we (and the local pediatrician) are pretty sure he caught rotavirus. Couldn't he have puked and **** his way into getting me out of yesterday's wedding? **** kill me.

We left Wednesday the 24th for Mexico City and stayed there until Monday, leaving for Barcelona and getting there Tuesday evening. Wednesday, Thursday, and half day Friday in Barcelona. Staying with our friend in Basel while in Switzerland and going to Lucerne (today), Interlaken, and Oeschinensee. Barcelona is super cool. Fun city, great food and weather. Switzerland is beautiful beyond words. It's like the entire country has several superior versions of Lake Tahoe. Leave Tuesday for Paris (maybe, next round of strikes and protests are Tuesday and we might not have a train), then the weekend in London and fly home Monday. So you made it okay with DDJ? This is a long trip right? Where are all the places you are hitting?Sign me up for just staying in Switzerland forever.
Our previous discussions for going to Europe centered around flying Pittsburgh to London, so it wasn't until the day we left that the reality of an 11 hour flight from Mexico City to Madrid and then an hour connector from Madrid to Barcelona finally hit me. It was long and DDJ getting rotavirus right before we left Mexico didn't help matters. It's tough because he's at an age now (2) where he's fun and silly and enjoys things, but he also has thoughts and opinions and demands. It was easier when he was just a nugget you strapped on and all he needed was a nap and some boob.
Our flight out of Mexico was at 7:30, so 9:30 Pittsburgh time and already past his bed time. He was exhausted and didn't feel good and we were trying to get him to take medicine and sleep during meal service. Was impossible. He eventually passed out right after dinner and slept until an hour before landing, so after an exhausting two hours it was okay.
The pediatrician in Mexico prescribed an anti-diarrheal (not authorized in the US) that based on his reaction tastes like garbage but helped significantly. Unfortunately, at some point this week he learned how to gargle and spit out what we inject into his mouth and hasn't had a drop of it in days. We've tried mixing it in water, milk, juice, applesauce, yogurt, whatever else you can think of to get him to take the medicine, and he immediately hates all of the them. So now he hates everything he's supposed to eat or drink to help with the diarrhea and keep him hydrated, which is why we had a fun visit to a children's hospital in Basel this evening to see if he was extremely dehydrated (was very disoriented and lethargic at the top of Mt. Rigi). Thankfully everything is okay and the decision to get travel health insurance before leaving was a good one.
All in all, everything has been excellent and he's been pretty wonderful given what we're asking of him. I've just changed enough liquid **** diapers in a public setting for a lifetime.

The good thing about boys is that, no matter what age, that's pretty much the cure for everything.

If you go all the way to France and then choose to spend time at Disney you deserve whatever heartache comes your way.
