As Jekyll and Hyde as Sparty has been this year, they've at least had the Hyde part at home and have been hammering opponents so far. That's an immensely impressive win out of the Lions to go into EL after Sparty hiccuped against Wisky and give them a 2nd straight loss. These guys seem to be really putting it together and doing something that not many teams have done in the conference -- win 3 straight road games.

As for the rest of the country, it's all kinds of topsy-turvy. We're looking at a first where the the 4 #1 seeds could all come from west of the Mississippi. I don't see Gonzaga or SD State losing more than 2 games between them the rest of the way so they'll lock up a pair of 1's. Baylor has been really impressive in the first half of the conference season, including whipping KU at the Phog back in mid-January. East of the Mississippi, it's a mishmash of above average to mediocrity. Anyone could win the Big Ten. Anyone could win the Big East. Anyone could win the AAC. The ACC is a lot of blah outside of Duke, Louisville, and Florida State. Down in the mid-major world, keep an eye on Northern Iowa and if they can make it thru their conference tournaments -- Liberty, Yale, East Tennessee State, and Loyola-Chicago (Sister Jean is still kicking). As for your player of the year, I have to agree with the Athletic in giving the midseason award to Dayton's Obi Toppin. He lit up Maui and nearly willed them to that championship. Dayton's only two losses are in overtime (Kansas & Colorado). I know I'll be spending the next month trying to catch a few of their games.

First game of the basketball trip goes to overtime. I'll take three more just like that. And hearing the calling of the Hogs in a 12,000-seat arena after the home team has hit a couple of 3's going into a timeout is pretty impressive.

Great summary OP.

Not gonna lie, I've been very loosely following CBB this year, and I had absolutely no idea that San Diego State was a Top 5 team.

17,196 last nite. Yeah, underclubbed a touch. So even more impressive.

Getting Malachi Flynn as a transfer from Washington State has been a giant plus. Having an experienced guy at the point is often the thing that can get a team over the top in the Tournament. But this team is really tough. They were down 10 at home to Utah State Saturday nite and just yawned and reeled off a big run to win going away. They have two tough road trips left (Boise and Nevada) to keep the undefeated streak alive. Their home crowd is pretty amazing. They call themselves The Show and after a couple of down years, they’re back in full force. Kawhi Leonard got em to the Elite 8 a few years ago. We’ll see if this group can go at least one better.

State played a an excellent first half then a fairly poor second half but pulled out their 6th in a row today to get to 18 on the season. Lamar Stevens had a career high 33.

First sellout since 2011 at the BJC, frankly I don’t remember a sellout since they left Rec Hall.

This is pretty clearly their best season since the Final Four season of 1954. Would be great if they could find some way to build lasting success from this. For now they are fun to watch and firmly in the tourney. First time in my memory that’s happened.

The Joe Crispen Years when they beat NC and got to the Sweet 16, I'm pretty sure they were firmly in the tournament for most of the season were they not?

Penn State puts up another impressive win on the road at Purdue the other night, extending their winning streak to seven games and currently ranked 13th. Man, this has been a dream season. Hopefully this starts to establish a reputation as a "good basketball school" for recruiting, etc. Just awesome stuff.

I don't want to get too carried away. It's a fluky basketball season (see an undefeated San Diego State team, Dayton sitting at #6, UNC and to a lesser extent Ohio State both unranked), so I'm not convinced yet that this isn't just a fluky year for PSU basketball.

Yeah I’m holding off on putting them in the same stratosphere as perennial tournament teams. See what recruiting buzz this season can generate and how they do with Lamar gone.

My course of action will be to enjoy the hell out of this ride because in my mind they have proven that they can beat anyone. Anywhere.

I’m not starting to believe in the program overall but with a seven game win streak that had better become 8 on Saturday with Northwestern at home- I definitely believe in this particular team. No predictions but I think they have the potential to go deep.

I believe there is some non-zero probability of that happening. If it does I will wave that freaking banner the rest of my days on this planet. Or till they ban me.

Penn State's been very impressive since the start of the calendar year. You can see that what they were building at the end of last season after that horrific 0-10 conference start is coming to fruition now. There's a lot to be said for experience and older players when you get to the NCAA Tournament and winning 4 straight road conference games in a conference where home teams were 72% going into Tuesday is a giant A on the report card. Now, I don't think I subscribe to the drumbeat by some analysts pushing PSU for a Final Four run but I don't think these guys are going to get intimidated in a tight game in the Tournament.

Dosunmu is one bad mamba jamba and Illinois has been like Penn State in that they've been able to gobble up road wins in conference this season. He was out against Rutgers and the Illini suffered. As soon as I saw him out there tonite, I figured PSU was going to be in trouble. That said, PSU's offensive output was pretty awful. Some questionable shot selection. Almost like they were working with a :24 shot clock instead of 30.

It's also the same dipshit that had the Bears meeting with Eli Manning yesterday. The only thing this insider is inside is his own head.

In other news, it's the beginning of conference tournament week with the Mountain West being the first major conference to tip off. Had a pair of buzzer beater opportunities in the NEC with one winning and one missing. Games seem to get a lot closer at this time of the year. The Big East got a bit more interesting with Nova beating Seton Hall and thus giving Creighton a chance to win a share of the regular season title Saturday at home vs the Pirates. And the Providence machine keeps on rolling. Another night, another close game for the Friars.

I'll ramble more on Sunday night before leaving for the Players and with it the end of the regular season.

Your Akron Zips are MAC champs. Preseason picked to finish 5th in their division (why TF the MAC has divisions in hoops I'll never know but never doubt MACtion) and won the conference by two full games. Time for conference tourneys and the joys of a one bid league.
