Sucks man.... The tournament this year was going to be entertaining with a lot of teams not normally ranked that high.

NCAA may release a bracket. It would at least be a fun what if....

No way Pat Chambers survives SFA the way PSU had been playing.

That's definitely one way to make a splash and get every one of your games noticed by the ESPNs of the world -- hire someone like Pitino to be your coach when you're a mid/low-major.

I may still do my tradition of picking the field tonight and just using the regular season champs as the autobids and then going from there.

Not that anyone cares at this point but I went ahead and did it complete with placing them in a bracket (which I don't do) with sites and matchups and everything. It's a lot harder to place in the bracket because there are restrictions as far as when conference teams can face each other and if there are regular season rematches and making sure BYU plays in the Thursday-Saturday pods, not to mention having to make sure teams don't play in their home arena (Creighton, but Gonzaga can play in Spokane because the games are at the Spokane Arena and not the Kennel). So here we go...

Midwest will play the South in the national semifinals. West will play the East.

Midwest (regional in Indianapolis)
OMAHA
1 Kansas
16 Prairie View/Siena

8 Houston
9 St. Mary's

SPOKANE
5 Wisconsin
12 New Mexico State

4 Oregon
13 Akron

ST. LOUIS
3 Kentucky
14 Belmont

6 BYU
11 Wichita State

TAMPA
2 Florida State
15 North Dakota State

7 Florida
10 Rutgers

South (regional in Houston)

ST. LOUIS
1 Baylor
16 Boston U.

8 Penn State
9 Providence

SACRAMENTO
5 Illinois
12 Stephen F. Austin

4 Virginia
13 Yale

GREENSBORO
3 Creighton
14 Little Rock

6 Texas Tech
11 USC/Xavier

SACRAMENTO
2 San Diego State
15 Winthrop

7 Cincinnati
10 Arizona State

West (regional in LA)

SPOKANE
1 Gonzaga
16 NC Central/Robert Morris

8 Ohio State
9 Colorado

OMAHA
5 Auburn
12 Hofstra

4 Villanova
13 Vermont

GREENSBORO
3 Duke
14 Bradley

6 Arizona
11 Utah State

CLEVELAND
2 Michigan State
15 Northern Kentucky

7 Iowa
10 Marquette

East (regional in New York)

CLEVELAND
1 Dayton
16 Eastern Washington

8 Michigan
9 Oklahoma

TAMPA
5 West Virginia
12 East Tennessee State

4 Louisville
13 Liberty

ALBANY
3 Seton Hall
14 North Texas

6 LSU
11 UCLA/Indiana

ALBANY
2 Maryland
15 UC Irvine

7 Butler
10 Richmond

Now someone smarter than me needs to put together a Google Doc or something in bracket form that can make advancements thru the bracket like it's a contest. Or find a site that simulates all these matchups to see what it would be like.

I MISS BASKETBALL =(

Good evening everyone and welcome to the 2nd round of Orlando Penguin's simulated NCAA Tournament. A number of nailbiters in the first round with a vast majority of the games flying way over the total. Did Vegas adjust to the high-scoring first round? Let's see what out friends at whatifsports.com came up with for the next round.

(Note -- after going thru games last nite, I realized I f'd up the bracket in 2 spots. Creighton and Xavier can't play each other in the 2nd round since less than 8 teams made it from Big East. You'll notice that Iowa and Michigan State are matched up in round 2. This is allowed as 10 teams from the Big Ten made the field and they didn't play each other more than once in the regular season. You might remember Michigan State and Minnesota squaring off in the 2nd round of last year's tournament.)

MIDWEST
Kansas 77, Houston 60
Oregon 83, New Mexico State 79
BYU 83, Kentucky 74
Florida State 78, Florida 62

SOUTH
Baylor 82, Providence 66
Stephen F. Austin 84, Yale 80
Creighton 91, Xavier 74
Cincinnati 84, San Diego State 73

WEST
Gonzaga 85, Ohio State 69
Auburn 79, Villanova 76
Duke 88, Utah State 75
Michigan State 99, Iowa 66

EAST
Dayton 77, Michigan 68
East Tennessee State 72, Louisville 70
Seton Hall 71, Indiana 69
Richmond 89, Maryland 69

So now we have some Cinderellas making the Sweet 16 with BYU, SFA, ETSU, and Richmond upsetting their way through. I can't say I was surprised by any of these results except the Cincy win and the Richmond blowout win. I could understand both those teams winning but by that much...not so sure. But that's what the computers spit out and we're going with it. Sweet 16 matchups will be Wednesday night (gotta give the teams a chance to travel).

This is awesome, thanks for doing this @Orlando Penguin

Also---holy F, there is no way they haven't used that theme song in 16 years, right? I swear I have heard it more recently than that.

Edit: Nevermind, realized they are using an updated version now.

Cincy over SDSU?
Wow.
The end of the season, SDSU was very shaky -- the Vegas rule was to fade them in the first half and then take them in the 2nd half. They really should have lost to Colorado State at the end of the regular season and they got tested in the first 2 games of the conference tournament. Against Utah State in the final, it was the reverse -- they came out great in the first half and then tailed off at the end. I saw Cincy play plenty this year and I'm not sure they'd win by that much but I definitely don't put it past them to suffocate them with good defense.

I wish I had at least perused the boxscore to see how the hell that happened. Richmond finished the year on a tear and could they beat the Twerps? Absolutely. Could they beat them by 20? Only if Cowan and Sticks both got hurt or had the worst shooting nights of their lives. Let's face it, the Twerps were good for a clinker here and there (at Rutgers, at Penn State, home against Sparty) but this would be an all-timer for that group.

Sweet 16 on to the end will have small write-ups with each game.

I had to grin in spite of myself thinking of a few sad turtles I know had that been reality.
