Duke 83 F/OT
AT CAMERON!!!
Snaps Duke's 150-game winning streak over non-con opponents at home (last loss -- St. John's and Bootsy Thornton in 2000). SFA scored on a breakaway layup just before the horn. Huge f-up by ESPN relegating this one to ACC Network...EXTRA, which means you had to watch it via streaming. Remember when EVERY Duke game was on normal TV? How the might have fallen.

That was a pretty risky shot attempt in terms of margin of error with time remaining

I actually assume the powers that be got their optimal result with the Duke loss being streaming only. They know people already spend a hundred or two for cable/sat but gonna have to spend more $ to see that one.

The game was on Fox Southeast which I get on my service but every scoreboard I saw listed it as ACC Extra. Color me frustrated by that. ESPN is doing for the ACC Network what they did for ESPN2 back in the mid-90s - put big teams and games on there to force cable companies to get it.

Was courtside yesterday to see Marquette’s Markus Howard go for 51 against USC. Amazing shooting performance. Really good matchup tomorrow between Howard and Anthony Cowan, Jr. for Maryland. Big East teams are gonna wish Howard had gone to the draft.

So far in a year that was supposed to be a bounce back, the Friars have now lost to Northwestern, Penn, and Long Beach State, capping it off with not even really competing in the second half against College of Freaking Charleston. Sigh..

Big win for State. They are now on the radar. Another shot at a Power 5 win vs Alabama on Saturday.
The OOC schedule has been pretty good for a change, no top tier teams but mid level Names like G-Town, Syracuse, Wake..... that should serve them well. The Ole Miss game would have been nice to hold on to. Throw the OSU debacle in the garbage can.

Went to bed last nite to see that somehow, Carolina lost again to Wofford at home. Woke up this morning to see that Cole Anthony was hurt and is out indefinitely. Heels head to the Kennel Wednesday. That could be big trouble.

First 'real' Saturday of conference action today...here's what's been going on this season in case you were stuck in football mode and just now coming over to our fun game.
-6 different teams have held the #1 spot, not that it matters other than for the talking heads and the fans to yap about something. Gonzaga's got it right now and given that their only competition in conference is going to be St. Mary's and BYU, they may have it for a few weeks.
-There's parity all over the place. No one has really stood out as head and shoulders above anyone else. Now that we get into conference season, some teams are gonna get exposed. Right now, I'd predict the 1 seeds in March are gonna be Gonzaga, Kansas, Duke, and Michigan State.
-The Big Ten and the Big East are two conferences that are going to be very good TV every time they're featured. Everyone in the Big East could win that tournament, even DePaul. The Big Ten could get 10 teams into the Dance and really the only team that doesn't have a shot is Nebraska and yet, they whacked Purdue by nearly 20 last month.
-Worst Power 5 team I've seen thus far? Texas A&M (when their starting PG looks like me, that's a problem).
-Mid-major fun -- the Southern Conference is very top heavy with 4 teams that could be fighting for an at-large (yeah, that's right) -- East Tennessee State already went on the road and beat LSU. Wofford beat Carolina at the Dean Dome. UNC Greensboro has 3 losses and 2 of them came on half court buzzer beaters. Furman doesn't quite have the big game head on their wall but they could easily go through this conference and win it (big game at home vs. ETSU today). Liberty out of the Atlantic Sun goes into conference play with 1 loss and has everybody back from the team that beat Mississippi State in the Tournament last year. However, they didn't really get a big one other than Vandy in their non-con so they may have zero margin for error.
Of local interest:
My team is grossly inconsistent and going nowhere. @mikey's Rutgers team blew out Nebraska on the road last night and they look like they could be an under-the-radar menace in the conference. @willeyeam's Akron Roos are off to a great start in the non-con but they enter a real hornet's nest in the MAC. That's a conference that gets zero love nationally and I think it's because no one is able to take out a big name when they get them in the non-con season. @RonnieFranchise's Friars got off to a horrid start but has seemed to have found their stride as they blasted Texas and then pounded Georgetown earlier this week. Big East is gonna be tough but Ed seems to have the ship righted. Penn State? Also a potential troublemaker. Not sure what happened in that demolition against Ohio State but that seems to be the blip rather than the norm. However, they're gonna need to not have a repeat against Iowa in the Palestra today or else the doubters are still have the strength of opinion. Pitt? I haven't seen them as much but they're a ton better than they were last year and I think Capel is the right guy to get them back to where Howland had them.

Good write up OP. Appreciate the MACtion love. I actually quite enjoy watching MAC hoops. It's pretty good basketball and pretty underrated imo. A couple of the past years I think they could have gotten a second bid if the teams had different names and conferences in front of them but it is what it is. Excited for conference play to get going now across the country

Good writeup. Agree the Friars seem to be putting it together with a couple blowouts over much better teams than LBSU and Charleston.
Dave Leitao is one of my favorite coaches named Cooley or Few and I like what he’s got going with Reed and Moore. Think you’re right- don’t sleep on em. PC has lost at DePaul with more consistent teams and today will be tough.
Clicker will be going with dear old state hosting Iowa at the same time.

In another early season test, Penn State defeated #21 Iowa at the Palestra, 89-86. Man, it is fun to watch this team playing so well.

As most here know... psu students are psychos. With them being ranked, it’s going to be tough to come into the BJC. They’ll have a raucous crowd backing them.In another early season test, Penn State defeated #21 Iowa at the Palestra, 89-86. Man, it is fun to watch this team playing so well.
