Boy/Cub Scout troops were gutted several years ago when gay leaders (and scouts?) were allowed in the Scouts. My son’s den had two other kids in it (that was the only year he did it). LDS churches stopped backing Packs, and other churches followed suit, really gutting membership.

Very few of my kids’ friends are in Scouts, so that doesn’t help the bottom line either - more than likely a national trend.

Gay leaders are the least of their problems.

As a marketing guy, I’m gonna have to say this is a bad strategy by Amsterdam.

There is still a LDS connection with my kids pack. I spent a couple days in the woods a couple weeks ago and I was shocked at how many racist comments I heard from some of the parents and scout people. It wasn't the majority by any means and the mothers in the groups were way more into the curriculum than most of the men. I personally am not a fan of scouts and very much prefer being out on my own teaching my kids, but he has a lot of friends in it and the kids are all very nice. Our scout leader basically said the same thing as you above with churches and said it's only a matter of time before it goes away. I guess what I'm saying is from my experience, it appears that the adults are ruining this for the kids.

I was in the scouts 60 years ago. I have nothing but good to say about my experience and the leaders I had. Really enjoyed a week at the Anawana Club sleeping in tents, cooking over an open fire and roasting marshmallows in the evening. My parents probably liked me being gone for a week also. Learned a lot about nature and how to behave and treat other people. We spent many weekends camping out at local farms. Almost made Eagle scout but not quite. Scouting taught me a lot.

I am sure most have had your experience. I'm not saying the BSA haven't had their share of issues, but by and large it gives young boys a tremendous experience and it really helps many of them develop and grow into fine young men. Our society now is just so f**king cynical anymore. It's exhausting. Seems like there isn't a single institution that hasn't been dragged through the mud/social media anymore.

What a weird thing to say about an organization facing 12,000+ accusations of child abuse that were swept under the rug.

Are you saying this isn't deserved? Because it sure sounds like you're saying they (BSA) don't deserve this.

Easy chief. I actually wasn't aware just how bad it was and didn't read the report. Obviously there is a systemic issue at hand here.

I meant in general, it's been depressing over the last decade, seems like every institution that was held in high regard at one point or another has had some kind of dark skeletons that have come out about it.

Just saying the scouts were great for me. Allowing gay leaders to join BSA was a big mistake, IMO.

Given the context, the post and sentiment seemed rather tone-deaf.

couple weeks back we had some winter race thing for the scouts in the woods and I ran into a couple smoking weed behind canoes who just happened to be running the event for the day. We both stared at each for a minute and then I nodded my I really don't care approval and we both carried on. They were extremely friendly for the duration of the day.

Read that earlier. Dude’s a hero, and whoever hit him should be punished severely. I have zero tolerance for anyone putting children in harm’s way.
