Coast guard officials said in a press conference Monday the 39 onboard included six crew members and 33 passengers. Four bodies had been recovered at the time of this report, including two adult males and two adult females. Four bodies found on ocean floor had not been recovered, officials said.

But on the last part of the three-day trip, the ship caught fire off California's Santa Cruz Island. At least 20 people died, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told The New York Times.

A day after Monday's inferno, about 14 people are still missing.
"This is probably the worst-case scenario you can possibly have," Brown said at a press conference. "You have a vessel that's on the open sea, that is in the middle of the night. I mean, it's 3:30 in the morning."

Of the 39 people on board -- 33 passengers and six crew members -- only five people have been found alive. The five survivors are all crew members.

It was a dive boat that apparently docked just offshore of a small island in California, where they'd stay for 3 days on the water.

Hong Kong(CNN) Eight young children were killed in a school attack in the central Chinese province of Hubei on Monday. It was their first day of class.

The attack took place at the Chaoyangpo Elementary School in Hubei's Enshi City. According to a statement from the local government, a 40-year-old man surnamed Yu attacked students at the school at 8 a.m. local time, when students would have been arriving for class.

He is in police custody.

Per SB County Sheriff (just now), there is no indication that anyone who was below deck got out.



What were the five crew doing awake at 3:30 am? Even if they were doing a first-light dive, that's hours earlier than they'd need to be up.

Yeah, and they probably don’t sleep in the same quarters as the customers. So if you wake up, and there’s a roaring fire separating you from 30 people, and you could either commit suicide by virtue or jump into the natural fire extinguisher, then the choice seems pretty obvious.

Not saying this is what happened. But it certainly seems plausible.

Reporting is that the five survivors were all awake and on the bridge at the time the fire broke out. If they were roused by the fire that would actually make the dereliction worse, as there was only one ladder topside (forward); the crew quarters were aft, so in a the-fire-woke-them-up scenario they would've had to run through the berthing racks past the sleeping passengers to bail out.

I read about that. Not gonna lie, if I would find that, my first instinct would not be to take it to an officer. I'm not even sure what I would do with it...keep it in a crawl space?
